AirAlamo

I’m all for this. In the article, you can see there are some sky screamers. Fact is, the small metro area (comparatively) means they have to find some unique ways to tap into the fanbase when the team isn’t winning titles. The Alamodome would be part of the 50th anniversary celebration next year. I also understand the appeal of playing at the new Moody Center in Austin, and the Spurs have played in Mexico before, so that’s not something that’s unheard of.

Maybe S can have them expand the arena in Hidalgo so the action can go to the Valley

Their ABA predecessor tried that.

The Texas Chapparals played in Dallas, Fort Worth and Lubbock.

It went so well that they ultimately sold and moved to San Antonio.

We’re talking about a few games, not 10 in Dallas, a dozen in Lubbock.

And well, basketball was still a tape delay sport then, if that.

The Spurs will use the ticket sales/revenue they get from this to demand a new arena in SA to be built (on taxpayer’s dime).

I think they hoped the area around the AT&T Center would get developed but it just never happened. A new arena would need to go into a better part of town

I haven’t been the Edinburg way down to the valley since it’s opened but it did look like it was going to be quite a structure last time I went that way.

I doubt it. I don't see Austin residents supporting an NBA team. Austin Spurs is as good as they are going to get.

Most predictions have Austin Metro passing San Antonio metro in next 15 years or so. Then moving into 20-25 largest metros. Being just an MLS town would be strange.

From? The lease in SA still has 10 years.

I think the Spurs are trying to tap into the Austin market a bit more. Moving out of SA would be a great way to alienate a large portion of the current fanbase.

This happens. Columbus is the biggest city in Ohio, and metro will soon pass Cincy. San Jose didn’t become home to the Raiders or Warriors.

The arena is still less than 20 years old, but I think a downtown venue would draw better. The city is expanding more to the north and west, which is away from the AT&T Center. Downtown SA always has stuff going on, and you’re more likely to attract the tourist dollar.

Yeah fricking right. The NBA teams make so much money off the TV deals that it's total joke for any franchise to try and push such a bullshite narrative. It's not like they'll use that money to sign FAs or lower prices. It's a cash grab. Nothing more nothing less.

That area is unique. It’s about to merge into one large metro area, but a lot of people in Austin ignore everything to their south, and a large portion of SA ignores everything to their north. The dividing line is somewhere between San Marcos and New Braunfels.

San Antonio is the 7th largest city in the US, and is about to pass Philadelphia, but it’s metro area isnt much bigger than the city’s population. The Austin metro population is closing fast on San Antonio’s.

Combined they are close to 5M. It makes sense that the Spurs would want to tap into that Austin population boom of transplants.

Ya there's a lot of inertia to maintain the status quo, but that will have an end date you'd think. Is that 15 years or 50? Who knows.

Columbus has MLS and NHL though.

It turns 20 this year which is about the timeline of modern stadiums now.

Right. In this case though, you have SA and Austin both growing at very fast rates. It’s not like San Antonio is shrinking and can’t support the team. You also have to factor in a fanbase that was very spoiled with about 20 years of competing at a championship level. Naturally, the arena will be more empty.
