Something that occurred to me about Dale Sr in his last race

I’m a big Earnhardt fan. In his last race at the 500 it is widely accepted that he was blocking cars behind him as much as possible so that his DEI cars could win.

But Sr. didn’t drive for DEI. He was basically throwing his own race so that his cars could win. The loss of his life swept away a lot of things, but I am now wondering had he not wrecked how his actions would have been received by Childress, the team, Goodwrench, etc. All of RCR was working to try to get another win, and he made the decision not to go for it.

Dale Sr. was blocking for his son and Michael Waltrip.

Side note: why are you making relive that moment? This is where nascar died.

I think Sr would've been blocking at that point regardless. It was just a bonus that his cars were out front.

Media would have complained.

RCR would have been fine. Dale made RCR, not the other way around.

Dale would have said he was blocking his position and did not have the car to win.

The 3 couldn't have passed the 15 and 8 if the two DEI cars stuck together. Dale would've been shuffled back pretty quickly. DEI was in a league of their own back then, no car was passing both cars if they were nose to tail.
The better question is what Dale would have done if he didn't wreck and Jr pulled out from behind the 15 out of 4 going for the win.

This is the correct answer.

Also, as sad of a day as that was, I'd rather reminisce on the good ole days of Nascar when it was full of bad asses rather than watch or talk about what it is now.

Dale Sr

made a career out of the long game in being first to figure out how to finish out of the top 5, but stayed in the top 15 of every race, to win the points needed to be the points leader.

he played the prevent defense of nascar and rode it to great success while limiting expenses since you arent crashing cars fighting to win when you are happy to stay in the 11-15 brackets

So following the rules and being intelligent about driving decisions is bad?

Tell me more.

i'd like to think it was his 76 career victories, a number so significant they honor it at every track

also notice every track has a "Turn 3". Coincidence?

never said it was bad, thats all on you

he was a genius and one of the first to figure out, you didnt have to win every race to win championships, and it was easier to just finish in the 11-15 range in most races and put everything into winning the few key races that matter most. the man built an empire doing it and no one else came close to his success doing it.
