Dude give it up. There are some great teams out there right now, is there as much depth in the league as before, probably not. But the great teams are just as good as the older great teams. Nostalgia really alters peoples perception way too much.

so you are basically admitting you never watched the NBA in the 80's or 90's and then claim the teams now are better or equal

He did?

This isn't another strawman argument, is it?

i asked him how old he was and he just deflected from the question and didn't even bother to respond to the part about the physical game the NBA used to be. shite im not even that old and my arse was glued to the tv as a kid watching the NBA. Those late 80's to mid 90's playoff battles were epic.

This, IMO, proves just how correct he is about nostalgia.

The NBA had its moments of hard fouls(but not entire games), and yes, hand checking was alllowed, but defense back in the 80s was MUCH MUCH MUCH worse than it is now.

I mean, it's not even close. Watch those Celtics-Lakers finals again if you ever see it on ESPN Classic, it's pretty mindboggling to watch it now just to see how little defense was being played, even in the Finals.

Well, hold on now.

The offense changed, so defense changed. There were great defensive teams back then, but they were playing a specific style of offense.

And you were not allowed to play Zone until 2002.

Anyone can get beat in man defense.

The 70's were better than the 90's.

Fewer teams, means every team was loaded with stars.

I was in another thread the other day where I randomly picked one season from the 80s, 1986.

Teams averaged 110 points per game in 1986. Teams averaged 96 points per game this past season.

Not much defense being played back then.

Zone defense + Hand check fouls + refs calling any contact= why I stopped watching as much after 2002.

The league is full of fancy boys now.

zone d def is a game changer, run and gunning vs man to man played right into the hands of the lakeshow and the celtics back then

However, don't get me wrong.

Lebron would dominate in the more physical era, against man defenses.

I think he would be averaging 5-10 ppg more each season

thats why i said Lebron back then might not work to well, he goes flying even tho he is the biggest freak on the court.

And o lord Dwade

AI seemed to be the last of the generation of tough guys playing in a pussy NBA

So...to transition this back to the OP then...

How much more unstoppable would Lebron have been playing in the 80s where he didn't have to worry about teams basically going to a box and one every time he touches the ball?
