Kelly was masking being soft on the offensive side with JD for 2 years but has been soft upfront on defense for 3 years. I am more surprised Bama turned so quickly. Saban’s mantra was make their asses quit.
But it does seem like outside of Georgia and maybe Texas the SEC has moved towards how Big 12 and ACC usually used to be in this regard especially some of highly ranked Oklahoma teams that looked more physical than they played.

The truth is, the transfer portal makes it impossible to develop players. These guys are out the door to the next stop before they learn to play with proper leverage and technique while their bodies are filling out during the maturation process. The portal also makes depth a major problem. You may have bodies, but its becoming rare to keep guys in a system year over year for the plays to be second nature, learn to play as a unit with your teammates and gel as a well oiled unit.
The quality of the game is suffering, and the transfer portal is only going to make it worse over time.
