I think Shaq loses some of his GOAT points because he starred in movies like Kazaam instead of Space Jam. Instead of being known as a cutthroat athlete, he was the more jolly, funny character on the team.
People like intensity when looking for the best of all time.

shaq's move at the end was disgusting

He was anything but jolly on the court. If anything he was a bully. He was always talking trash to David Robinson, the entire Kings roster, Andrew Bynum, Dwight, ect. He got in several fights, one being with Charles Barkley. I honestly can't think of a center who played with more of a mean streak...Zo maybe, but Shaq owned him too.
People who think like that simply didn't watch him play.

Shaq definitely had work ethic issues in the offseason, but his performances in the playoffs, and specifically the Finals 00-02, were incredible.
I understand and appreciate the different perspectives that come into play when discussing the greatest center of all time, but what do we mean by greatest? Most impressive statline? Most accolades? Most diverse? Is it fair to compare Bill Russell to Shaq, and if so, would anyone actually take a prime Russell over a prime Shaq if starting a franchise today?

Shaq is the most dominating player in the history of the NBA.

Right about when the NBA kept inventing reasons every year to not give him the MVP. He should've won the MVP 4 or 5 times. The one Nash won over him was a travesty.

Yeah that was his first year in Miami. He was the best player in the league from 99-2005.

You should read his autobiography. Even when he was little he was beating the shite out of people on the reg

Shaq had a stronger case in 04 than Nash, no doubt. I think both of Nash's MVPs are a bit ridiculous considering he's always been a complete liability on defense. The Most Valuable Player in the NBA should never be a liability on either end of the floor.
However, look at Nash's statline for his second MVP in 05-06 (Kobe should have won this season):
19/11/4
51% FG, 44% 3pt, 92% FT
That's pretty incredible.
On a semi-related note, Nash played fewer minutes during both MVP seasons than any other MVP since 1980. He averaged 34mpg in 04/05 and 35mpg in 05/06. Kobe averaged 41mpg in 05/06 en route to a 35/5/5 season on 45% shooting while earning 1st team all defense, but he was snubbed.
Kobe played one more game than Nash in 05/06, but played 481 more total minutes, or about 10 more games.

I thought Kobe was better in 2005, which was his best season. It is honestly appaling that the two if them combined for only two MVP awards. One or the other was the best player in the nba for basically a decade.

love the big man. Favorite athlete ever. Amazing to watch so much power, especially when he would get pissed off.

Why are pitting the 2nd and 3rd best players of all time against one another?

2000 NBA Finals Game 1: 43 points 19 rebounds
Rik smits had 12 points 5 rebounds. Poor Rik.
Shaq had it all. He just cared a little too much about stuff off the court.

Which makes Jordan all the more impressive. Movies, guest appearances, endorsements, gambling, golf, baseball, etc. couldn't keep him from being the most dominant player on the floor. I don't think Kobe does anything other than play basketball and occasionally go on Jimmy Kimmel. It's probably killing him to spend all this time with his wife and daughters.

I love watching Shaq in his prime highlights. Catch ball, dribble, dribble, dribble, dunk over some poor center that stood no chance. It was so unfair.

You would have a hard time finding a bigger Shaq fan than me. I still think he was the best C of all time, but I am definitely in the minority. I will say this though, if he had the work ethic of a Jordan or Kobe, he would have gone down as a top 3 player of all time. So much natural talent, but he relied to heavily on it. If he stayed at his first 3 NBA years weight, the injuries wouldn't have piled up as much either.
I'm not sure I can say he was the best center of all time. Wilt (at least) has a tremendous argument.
Kige the heck out of the could have been even better argument though. If he had stayed in the ballpark of 300 pounds during his career he would have extended his period of dominance another 5 years IMO

I think the best gauge, is to ask who would you take if you were starting a team. What center in his prime do you want at tip off? For me it's Shaq. I agree Wilt is definitely in the conversation, but I just think Shaq was better. They both sucked at FT's though.
