He was on the warm seat there for awhile with their lack of playoff success. They had a lot of ups and downs in the regular season last year and it was reported after they won the Cup that there was a game in, like, December or January that, if they had lost, would have led to his firing. They won and got on a little bit of a roll afterwards.
Essentially, they hired Rierden as a coach-in-waiting a few years earlier (and I believe it wasn’t Trotz’s decision to hire him; Baloo can correct if I’m mistaken). So there was a lot of awkwardness beyond just $$. Pretty sure it was a mutual decision for him to not return; they could have reached a contract agreement if both sides wanted to, but I think each side was fine with moving on.
