If he actually puts his money where is mouth is, I'd be impressed. I'd still massively disagree with him, but it's balls to just give up 10 million.

why is it stupid? How is it different than other workplace rules like dress code?
Not only that, the NFL has prevented other teams and players from wearing special patches or from even having a bible verse on their eyeblack.

Once that player is in uniform he represents his employer and the NFL. Many companies forbid political activism in the work place.

WhT they do on their own time is their own business. Just don’t bring that shite to the office.

Good riddance. There's certain things I can't do in my workplace, but it pays the bills.

Well I will say this about Matthews...His father was a Master Sergeant in the Marines. His brother was also a marine and was killed working as a private defense contractor in Afghanistan after serving for 10 years.

He also donated $75k this year to charitable organizations related to this "movement."

However, if the NFL institutes a rule like the NBA has, he will get fined and will get suspended. If he chooses to retire if the rule is put in place, then he's welcome to it. I'd honestly probably have respect for him if he did. I wouldn't agree with his choice, but I would at least respect his right to express his views and willing to take whatever consequences come from him doing that.

Plenty of decent people have stupid relatives. Their actions have no bearing on him.

ETA: He's the stupid relative if that isn't clear.

It would surprise me if the NFL did this. Lots of players can’t stand Goodell and I could see lots of guys refusing to stand just to spite him. You can only suspend so many guys.

There are about 10 players in the NFL (give or take a few) that could do this and actually make the owner sweat. Matthews isn't even in the next 5 tiers of players.

Please remember who started this movement and the fact he wore a Fidel Castro shirt to his press conference to discuss oppression in the United States. How can anyone take CK serious when he pulls a stunt like that.

Ask all those Cubans who have risked their lives to escape Castro about oppression.

I said it before and I'll say it again. Many of these talking heads and players are selfish in that they are destroying one of the things minorities are able to find success in.

I'm tired of hearing, 'Stick to sports.' It comes down to right and wrong in this world," Matthews told ESPN last month. "If you see wrong and don't say anything, that's wrong. As minorities, what do you want to happen before we say anything? They tried to have a silent protest, and look what happened. It's your right to stand or sit down. You have that right, that freedom of speech, and you're not allowing that to happen."

I missed his protest about the record high black on black homicide rate in Chicago.

What I'm saying is that Matthews as two immediate family members who served, his father being career military. Based on some of the interviews he's had, I don't think he would be doing this if his family members who serve felt disrespected. Again, I don't agree with his decision, but if he's willing to sacrifice his career over it, then he'd be showing that he actually has conviction in his protest. I can respect people who do this without having to agree with them.

The questions is, why is this relevant? The impact it is having on the business of the NFL is clear. Whether or not two people in his family feel disrespected is irrelevant to the real issues that are making the NFL consider a rule change.

Let's see what happens in the NBA this season. They already have this rule. It will be interesting what the NBA's response will be if a bunch of high profile players refus to stand. I think that would be a good barometer for the NFL to use.

What a dumb bitch. The reason most started protesting was being referred to as sons of bitches. It's sheep mentality. These athletes see one or two guys do it, go nuts on Twitter directed at the president, and they all want to pick a side. And he thinks it's about police brutality.

It's relevant because most people care about their friends and families more so than how they are perceived by people they don't know.

Well, then NFL players will see reduced contracts if the owner's business is adversely affected so much that they can't afford to pay players what they are now.

But they're not irrelevant to Matthews in particular, which is all I'm talking about.

Popovich will have the players sit for anthem when he wants to give them an off night to get around not sitting healthy players.

While your conjecture is possibly true, it isn't relevant, which was my point.
