How ironic and appropriate that he died the week of the Byron Nelson golf tournament as Lord Byron was his hero growing up. CBS has had a tough year as two of their broadcasting legends have passed away in the last 2 months.

Venturi: “When I was 13 years old, the teacher told my mother, ‘I’m sorry, Mrs. Venturi, but your son will never be able to speak. He’s an incurable stammerer,’” Venturi said in 2011. “My mother asked me what I planned to do. I said, ‘I’m taking up the loneliest sport I know,’ and picked up a set of hickory shaft across the street from a man and went to Harding Park and played my first round of golf.”

Golf Digest had a Q & A with him in 1994. He was asked his advice for young competitive players. His quote "just remember, every day that you miss practicing it takes you one more day to get good"

Venturi's interview with Fehrety was an unbelievable insight to the world of golf, hanging with Sinatra and the "rat pack" and how almost winning the master's as an amateur would have completely changed the course of his life.
I'm sure they'll replay it - and I highly recommend watching it.
