For the first Monday night game of 2020, Steelers at Giants, ESPN will use its prime time college football pairing of Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit, according to author James Andrew Miller. For the second game of the doubleheader, Titans at Broncos, ESPN will use Steve Levy, Louis Riddick and Brian Griese.

It’s unclear whether ESPN has formalized its plans for the entire NFL season. Miller added that some changes are still possible depending on the status of the college football season. Fowler and Herbstreit are ESPN’s top college football broadcasting duo, but at this point we don’t know how many college football games ESPN will have to broadcast.

I'm hoping this doesn't pull them off of college football but seeing as ESPN's current MLB policy is doing broadcasts from studio or home, I don't see a reason they can't do both.

I like how the main MNF crew for week 1 doesn't have a color commentator who played in the NFL.

Herbstreit is very good at what he does. He will be well prepared as usual.

Matt Millen played in the NFL and was a GM but I don't want to listen to him call games. Herbstreit may not have played in the NFL, but he does know football.

Dude is a machine...if he can fly from Game Day cross country to do a night game and crush it, he can handle this.

Sounds good in theory. And broadcasters have pulled off back-to-back day doubleheaders in the past (Pat Summerall and Tom Brookshier did it in the ‘70s on a Saturday/Sunday weekend late in the year).

In reality, that’s a tough ask to do it every week. These guys just don’t plop headsets on and do a broadcast. Lots of prep work for just one game a week. Add another two days later and do that for at least a dozen weeks and that’s a heavy load. Even Buck/Aikman occasionally take a Sunday off after a Thursday game if FOX doesn’t have a doubleheader that Sunday.

MNF would actually be watchable for the first time in a while.

But if this became permanent and they no longer do college, then frick this shite. Saturday Night college football just wouldn't be the same without Herby and Fowler.

I would guess that Gameday will be a studio show this year.

True, I'll give you that.

It's just interesting that ESPN can't find someone who is MNF caliber that played/coached in the NFL.

Kirk is actually really good. The best in college football by far.

I have no idea why they didnt think of this before

He is the best college football guy but its because he knows everything about all the teams he does.

Translates well to the NFL

He reminds me of Gruden. I bet he studies film like crazy during the week.

I'm dating myself, but Howard Cosell never played a down in the NFL. The ratings didn't suffer.

No. Frank Gifford was. Dandy Don Meredith was the analyst & front man for Howie.
