Just don't say it is "spooky". That word is offensive, or so it has been explained to me.

Not to derail thread…but super fun game that diehard CFB fans should put on their bucket list.

They stopped calling Oregon/Oregon State "Civil War" as well which is even dumber

And replaced it with a creative moniker:

The Oregon–Oregon State football rivalry

I'm sure they had a very good reason.

quote:

The University of Oregon and Oregon State University announced Friday the moniker they use for their rivalry game will be changed as the scrutiny over symbols and statues about the actual Civil War and the Confederacy has heightened since the start of June.

I must've missed Ken Burns exhaustive chapter on Oregon in his Civil War series but I found the game changing info:

quote:

The First Regiment Oregon volunteer Cavalry was a volunteer regiment in United States service Union army that was formed in response to the American Civil War.

With men recruited in Oregon and some recruited in surrounding states, the regiment primarily served to protect the state of Oregon and surrounding territories during the American Civil War.

I kinda get what you’re saying but man there was a shooting at a HS football game in Oklahoma like 2 months ago.

Why not call it what it really is, another rivalry game between two teams.

This one was greatness:

Catholics vs. Convicts

The phrase "Catholics vs. Convicts", a T-shirt slogan created prior to the matchup by Notre Dame students and friends Joe Frederick, Michael Caponigro, and Pat Walsh was reported by the press. The slogan was a play on Notre Dame's Catholic image and Miami's roster of flamboyant football players.

and they succeeded brilliantly. No major Confederate incursions made it into Oregon.

"Red River Rivalry" is a tongue twister anyway. Who thought this name was a good idea?

But you still constantly see "shootout" used to describe CFB games in articles.

CBS Headline:

Ole Miss surges up college football rankings after shootout win vs. LSU

So what are we doing here? More selective linguistic gymnastics?

Your mistake here is trying to apply logic in an illogical situation. Your equations will never balance themselves trying to do that.

Love seeing UT lose.

There's also a Red River Revel in Shreveport every fall.

Especially since the Civil War brought about the end of slavery.
