CFP Semifinal at the Rose Bowl Game Up 29% Year-Over-Year; CFP Semifinal at Sugar Bowl up 19% from Last Season

ESPN’s presentation of the College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Rose Bowl Game Presented by Northwestern Mutual featuring a thrilling showdown between Oklahoma and Georgia (5 p.m. ET) on New Year’s Day delivered an impressive 14.8 overnight (ESPN + ESPN2), up 29% from last season’s first CFP Semifinal on the same two networks and 53% from the 2015 season’s first CFP Semifinal, also on ESPN and ESPN2. This year’s Rose Bowl Game on ESPN-only delivered a 14.2 overnight. The rating for the Georgia victory nearly matched the much-anticipated, record-breaking inaugural CFP Semifinal at the Rose Bowl Game (Jan. 1, 2015), which remains the highest-rated CFP Semifinal to date (15.5 overnight).

The Allstate Sugar Bowl between Clemson and Alabama (9 p.m.) delivered a very strong 12.5 overnight (ESPN and ESPN2), up 19% from last season’s second CFP Semifinal, also on ESPN and ESPN2, and 26% from the 2015’s season second CFP Semifinal on the same two networks. The ESPN-only presentation of the Sugar Bowl delivered a 12.0 overnight.

It's mind-boggling to me that ANYONE ever thought New Year's Eve would be a good time to have/televise these semi-final games.

The peach bowl or something should have been New Year’s Eve. Having three games crammed into 11am spot sucked.

Move one game over, and the two playoff games up an hour to make it the perfect set up.

No. ESPN didn't want to air them on NYE. The Rose and Sugar were greedy fricks who had it put into the playoff contracts that they will always play on NYD unopposed regardless of if they are a playoff bowl.

This doesn't mean NYE is the only other possible day for the semi final games.

no, they knee it was a terrible idea but the sugar and rose didn't care. They made some changes that come in effect next year, but it won't always be on new year's day

Definitely - the Outback Bowl would have drawn much better than a 3.1 if played/aired 8EST/7CST NYE...

Agrred, but when they were scheduling bowl game times, they were probably under the assumption that there would be a Sunday Night Football NFL game on NYE with playoff spots on the line to compete against in that timeslot.

For one last time, ESPN tried their damnest to move it, but the Rose and Sugar were against it because New Year’s was on a Sunday and did not want to compete with the NFL.

It’s gonna happen again once New Year’s fall on a Sunday

This seems like very misleading data to me

Last year, the Sugar Bowl and Rose Bowl were a non playoff game

Of course the ratings will soar this year

And being on new years eve last year killed the Playoff games as well

Some executive with the Peach Bowl likely anticipated a Sunday night NFL game being played.
