I think they know that, but it was really the best spot this year if Sugar and Rose won't budge from January 1.

They had been doing it the Saturday before NYD but this year that would have been Christmas

Monday the 27th might have been the only day they maybe could have done but ESPN has MNF

Next NYE is a Saturday and New Year's Day is a Sunday - is the Rose Bowl going to keep that Sunday NYD slot and expect the NFL to adjust schedule? Or are they ok competing with the NFL?

Does the NFL historically move their games when the calendar falls like this?

The Rose Bowl has moved to 1/2 in the past when NYD is a Sunday.

No. The Rose always goes to the 2nd. I see NYE is the date again next year for the semis.

No. The rose bowl only moves when it's on a Sunday. They did that before the CFP.

ETA: Just checked. When NYD is a Sunday the Rose Bowl has played on January 2nd since its inception. Even before TV or the NFL. All the way back to the 20's.

Notre Dame gets eyes.

That's why NBC gave them a gazillion dollars to exclusively nationally broadcast all their games.

Nope, when Jan 1 is a Sunday the national holiday is officially Jan 2. The Rose Bowl played on Jan 2 in 1922.

Seems like they get less eyes than OSU based on those numbers
