Can the NFL punish a player for something that happened while the player was in college?

The NFL said in a statement that it was aware of the incident but declined to comment. Because the alleged rape happened before Araiza was drafted, he would not be subject to the league's personal conduct policy.

Why civil and not criminal then?

Civil your attorney represents you.

Criminal your attorney represents the State.

In other news, the Cleveland Browns have traded their 2023 RD2, 2024 RD2, & 2025 RD2 picks for Matt Araiza. Araiza is expected to sign an $80mil guaranteed extension.

In a criminal case...where you are the victim...the DA represents the State...not the victim.

How is that confusing?

You said "your attorney represents the state."

Who is the "your" you're referring to?

Criminal: State vs Defendant

Civil: Jane Doe vs Defendant

what if he just had consensual sex with her and didn’t know her age.

Well there’s this from LA Times article linked in previous post:

“According to the lawsuit, the teen told Araiza she was a high school student and, even though he could see she was highly intoxicated, he told her to perform oral sex, then had sex with her.”

It doesn’t matter anyway. There is no intent requirement. All that matters is that you committed the act with a person below the statuary age.

The specific purpose of an “age of consent” is to negate “consensual sex.”

The more troubling aspect of this, morally, IMO, is that he then allegedly 'delivered' the girl to teammates.

Yes. I was just pointing out the fact that allegedly he did in fact know she was underage.

Ongoing investigation, and evidence revealed during the civil case can help the criminal case

Expect a complete stay of the civil case for this very reason.

Araiza released by the bills

quote:

Bills have informed rookie punter Matt Araiza that he is being released, effective immediately. Araiza has been accused along with two others of gang raping a 17-year-old girl last year in a civil lawsuit filed on Thursday.
