If NY or Boston were involved, I could see this kind of deal. With THIS market, I was thinking 220 over 9/10.

quote:

Wilson was offered 5 years $100m

CC: $24-million AAV
Lee: $24-million
Johan: $23-million
Halladay: $20-million
Wilson: $20-millon (if he would have signed)

One of these things is not like the other

You would think, but with the amount of talent the Marlins have already signed, maybe they wanted Albert to go to a bigger market?

Lately that would be Johan. That guy fell off the map completely after being the best pitcher in the game for a stretch.

I just think the players union would want to increase future contracts. It just seems odd.

I agree. Maybe they didn't truly believe Miami could afford it is all I'm saying. I, for one, am glad Pujols is in the AL. I don't want to see that guy at all (I'm a Braves fan).

Big winner here may be Mark Hamilton

I disagree. I think the big winner is Allen Craig. Berkman will move to 1B and Craig will most likely be the starting RF opening day.

As a Pirates fan, I agree; however, I would enjoy seeing an NL team screwd with his contract from years 5-10 and not able to acquire other pieces to compete.

Ten years at that money per year for a guy who may be a lot older than 31, injury prone, body breaking down, and numbers on the decline the past three seasons is just not smart.

Prince, at age 27, for eight years is the better deal. He's just now entering his prime, had a better year than Pujols this year, and is more athletic.

True, a buddy of mine at work mentioned how sick the All-Star team will be with the AL - I mean look at their first 1B

Pujols
Miggy
A-Gon
Tex

That's pretty nasty IMO

Prince probably ends up in Baltimore or Seattle too, so you might as well include him

Adam Lind in Toronto had a very good year as well

Hosmer is a good, young player too

Trumbo is another good, young player, assuming he stays at 1B and Pujols at DH

Poo-holes can retire an Angel. Let's see if the people in California parade him around the ballpark and worship him until he dies like St. Louis does with her baseball legends (ie. Musial). Poo-holes had that super rare chance to be King of an entire city for the rest of his life! Instead, he'll end his career simply as a good DH.

Well said. As a neutral observer of this, I have to say it saddens me as a baseball fan. Not very often a player comes along like Pujols who has the opportunity to become forever engrained in the fabric of a city and franchise. Couldn't care less about his motivations.. money, greed or otherwise. Just unfortunate for annals of the game that he didn't stick with STL.

I agree with this. Guys like Ripken, Gwynn, Chipper, and even Derek Jeter have more of my respect because they stayed with one franchise from beginning to end. It's rare in today's game.

What would I rather be if I were Poo-holes:

1) Mind blowingly rich. Hall of famer. And, the King of not only one of the best cities in baseball history, but the king of an entire region called Cardinal Nation.

Or...

2) Obnoxiously rich. Hall of famer.

I would like to think that I'd take door number 1. How many people have the opportunity to be King their entire life?

I will always wonder what the rest of Griffey's career would have looked like if he stayed in Seattle

And there's a fascinating poll on the ESPN home page RE: does leaving affect his legacy

LINK

I say fascinating because apparently more than 50% of people don't think it affects AP's legacy leaving STL. That is weird to me. Of course it affects his legacy when if he stayed he could have established himself as the best player ever to play for the NL's best franchise
