butt hurt much, give pujols a break. he already took one hometown discount with his last contract. he took 15 when he should have gotten a-rod money. and he helped deliver the cardinals 2 championships in that time.

if, a team offered him 30 million more and cardinals wouldn't match, why should he stay. he already gave y'all the 100 million dollar discount. i don't blame the cardinals for not matching, it was a smart baseball move on their part.

You mad, brah? Damn, you sound like you're on your period. If you've read anything on here, you'd know that most Cardinal fans aren't upset that the Cardinals didn't re-sign him to an outrageous deal. I'm happy that we didn't spend that sort of money on a guy who is 32 years old.

However, it's not like he hasn't been getting paid. The question is when do you have enough money and why do you play the game? For some players, World Championships are why they play the game (riches come with that). For others, the Hall of Fame is why they play (riches come with that too). For less than 1 percent of all baseball players, Legacy is why the choose to stay with a team for their entire career (once again, riches come with that).

For Poo-holes, Money is why he plays the game plain and simple. I'm all for making as much money as you can, but would you give up the legacy of going down in history as the greatest Cardinal player of all time (just ahead of Stan Musial) simply to make an additional $30 million more dollars with the Angels? Trust me, he won't be worshipped for the rest of his life like Cardinal fans worship Musial when he retires as an Angel.

Money is paper. Legacy lasts forever. He could've had both. He chose paper.

You're taking way too romantic of an opinion on this. Pujols is still a legend. And you can't predict how his legacy is viewed in St.Louis the day he signs with a different team.

Maybe he doesn't want to be worshiped by fans. Maybe he would rather make as much money as he can for his family or foundation. He was offered more money by Miami but chose to go to the Angels. It's not like he's going to a crappy team; he's going to another team that has a great chance of making the World Series next year. And when he's old and his skills decline, he still can contribute as a DH.

Pujols didn't take a discount on that last deal. He wanted security, he got it. He was under team control for 3 more years and got a pretty damn big deal for only having 3 years of service time. Not to mention the record (at the time) deal they gave him before he was arbitration eligible. He outperformed his deal but he got way more than most would at that time.

Easy to say he got screwed in hindsight, but he got a pretty solid deal considering everything.

Agreed, Srbtiger06. And you know what, Cornhat...sure, I'm romantic about the idea that great players can both make shite loads of money and play their entire careers with the same team. It still happens in this day and age.

Poo-holes gave Cardinal fans a different perception of his character than what has went down in the last 24 hours. That's what is so confusing. He has stated over-and-over that he wanted to retire a Cardinal. He wanted to be revered in the same sentence with Stan Musial, Lou Brock, Ozzie Smith, etc. He also said the contract negotiations weren't about the money.

Well, it seems like that was all talk. A bunch of crap. Before you think that Cardinal fans are treating poor Pooholes unfairly, consider how he's handled this situation as well...

I, for one, look forward to when the Cardinals play the Angels in a future World Series. We have 10 years to make this happen. Can you imagine the roar in Busch Stadium if Freese were to hit the winning home run in an epic series battle against a team led by their former hero? It would be like Luke Skywalker defeating Darth Vader, and then Darth Vader in between his dying gasps of air essentially asking for forgiveness while shedding tears of regret...

Damn, I'm excited at the idea of this scenario! If any team can make it happen, it's the Cardinals.

Cardinals fans would probably give Pujols a standing O in spite of this. Classiest fans in sports.

You're probably right. But the fact remains that he'll never be Musial, Brock, or Ozzie Smith. He'll be a legend in the Hall of Fame, but he'll never be to Angels fans what he would've been to Cardinals fans if he'd stayed in STL...

I don't blame you as a fan but I think St.Louis will treat Pujols kinder than you're implying. The no-trade clause and opportunity for DH might have been big deal breakers for him too. If it was ALL about the money he should be a Marlin. There must be some circumstances about his LA deal that he liked other than money.

I agree with you concerning the contract. However, he still could've agreed to an obnoxiously huge Cardinals offer and the reward would've been so much more than money will ever offer...lifelong legendary status. I guaranty that he'll never be nearly as much of a legend walking around LA after he retires than he would've been in STL.

I disagree with you about how Cardinal fans will treat him. They'll treat him far better than most clubs, but I'm not so certain he'd receive a standing O any longer. Cardinal fans feel cheated.

I get that he wants to extend his playing career. I get that the American League will most likely allow him to do that through the DH. I just have to imagine that if I were Albert, I'd want so much more than the second largest contract in history. I'd want to be the King of St. Louis and take the throne after Musial is gone. I'm not Albert, though. And, that's the whole point. We all thought that he was a completely different person...

Winners:

1) Kids with Down Syndrome - Hopefully Pujols will pledge a lot of his new contract to the Pujols Family Foundation which helps kids with Down Syndrome.

2) Cardinals - for not bankrupting the organization for one person who is entering his twilight years.

3) Stan Musial - for successfully defending his throne against a Pujols coup d'etat.

Losers:

1) Pujols 5 - Pooholes restaurant in St. Louis

2) Pooholes (the player) - Money is paper. Legacy lasts forever. He could've had both. He chose paper.

3) Angels - They don't realize this yet...

4) Hot Carl - simply for being a bloody douche.

False. This shows you have 0 clue about the Rangers farm system.

If Cards fans are anything like Angels fans, they'll give him a standing O should he return to St. Louis to play against his old team.

$250 mil. is a lot of money, and I'm sure that was the major factor in his decision. Not just for himself or even his family though. Pujols seems to me to be a very good guy. A good guy can do an awful lot more good with that kind of money.

You mean like how Round Rock got bounced in the first round of the playoffs 3-1 despite having the second-best record in the Pacific Coast League? (Which was actually an improvement from the prior year when OKC was the affiliate; they lost 3-0 in the first round)

Or how none of the other minor league affiliates got anywhere near a playoff, and haven't in several years?

Sounds like their minor league system is following in the footsteps of the big club -- rarely get to the playoffs, do poorly when you get there.

Outside of Fielder (which would be a disaster if the Rangers sign him) that's why you're not hearing about any big moves or any early trades -- they know they have nothing with which to make a deal for talent, and once the Rangers fall apart around the All-Star break (usually they do it by Tax Day) they can get more in deals for Josh and Napdawg. If Nathan can do well in his recovery, they can deal him too.

Actually they're better than Angels fans. They are the most knowledgeable and best fans in baseball. After all he didn't sign with the Cubs (that would have been ugly).
