Pro Sports Bubble: Will it Pop?

1. People are cutting Cable at a very high rate which means that the national tv networks that give leagues billions are losing money at rapid pace.
2. Public opinion is starting to turn on Tax payer funded stadiums/parks/arenas
Most of these tv deals are guaranteed until the mid 2020s but once we are past that point will we see a severe drop off in revenue and salaries ?

Speaking for baseball:
1.) The big television deals teams agree to are with the regional sports networks.
2.) There will always be a city that is either eager to elevate itself to "major league status" by attracting a team with a shiny new ballpark, and a city not willing to lose its "major league status" by losing its sports team because of a ballpark issue.
And there will always be politicians who will find a way to make it happen, regardless of whether the public wants it or not, as well as greedy owners willing to move their team to the next city that offers them a pile of free cash.

It will pop once fans will realize they are not part of the team but are the ones funding everything.

Regional networks will lose money as well cause of cordcutting

"Bubble" is quickly coming into "-gate" territory of lazy terms to describe anything
Posted on 2/17/17 at 4:10 pm to BobCoot
Are some of those channels available a la carte on SlingTV and such?
Posted on 2/17/17 at 4:13 pm to BCMCubs
Doubt they will sell enough to give more than they already are. For example twc is giving dodgers 334 mil per year on average. Not sustainable
Posted on 2/17/17 at 4:27 pm to BobCoot
It'll deflate. But people will buy sports channels a la carte once the industry adjusts to that model.

Got to find the right price point... NBA league pass sells individual games for 6.99. That's too much. I'd go with 1.99 or 0.99 and get repeat business

The collegiate bubble will be hit first - the debt load at most universities is not sustainable.
There will be some P5 programs that won't be able to keep up with power programs. It will start a true segregation of athletic programs.

There isn't much I'd rather watch in tv or the internet than live sports, so I hope not.

ESPN outbid themselves and within 2 years, they will pay more for tv rights then they take in.

There is no "bubble." Not everything is a bubble.

As sports fans, let's hope the industry never adjusts to that model.
