Pretty crazy that before today, Tiger Woods had won a tournament more recently than Phil. I would have never guessed that.

The only young guns that have a chance is DJ, Rory and Rickie Fowler. Neither are consistently at the top of their game like Phil or Tiger did for so long.

Not 100% sure, but I’m pretty sure Phil was the only person to shoot under par on that Sunday, and he was -3.
It was honestly an all-time round of golf. Maybe the best round he’s ever played, given the circumstances and conditions.

Phil wasn’t plagued by injuries so what led to the last 5 years slump?
He’s in his latter 40s now and golf may be deeper than it’s ever been.
I don’t think JT or Spieth will ever carry the popularity of Tiger or Phil because the PGA roster is so much deeper than it was 15-20 years ago.

Arthritis and age generally.
Glad for him that he won one.
he was under investigation for insider trading for a while there.
that might have worn on him.

Who were the best players from 1998-2003?

Another interesting Phil stat - he's won 49 times on tour, including back to back majors in 2005-2006, but he's never been #1 in the world, and he's never won a POtY award on tour.

I think Phil will eventually be the oldest person to win a major.

unfortunately Phil's prime ran along with Tiger's. Tger won POY in 1997, 1999-2003, 2005-2007, 2009, and 20013. Tiger was #1 in the world for a total of 683 weeks from June of 1997 to May of 2014.

Hard to believe Phil never spent a week at number one. Easily the second best golfer from the last 20 years or so IMO.

Even in his slump Phil made every US cup team and finished 2nd in 3 majors.

I was never a fan of Phil until his collapse at Winged Foot. He was absolutely on fire back then. I don't remember what the official rankings were leading into the tournament but I bet Phil was getting very close to number one. Then he melted down as bad as I've ever seen on the tee at 18. I thought that quote afterwards was so honest I couldn't help but feel bad for him and I've caught myself pulling for him ever since. "I still can't believe I did that. I'm such an idiot."

Tiger was 17 in 1992. His first win on Tour wasn’t until 1996.

Still a classic. Tournaments are more entertaining when Phil is in the hunt late on Sunday. He’s just entertaining as hell to watch. That British Open with him and Stenson squaring off was incredible

Justin Thomas has the best chance at double-digit majors of this current crop. IMHO.
(but still a small chance)
