Probably because the narrow fairway so they’re teeing off with iron or 3wood. It’s more that than the approach shot.

Golf is a game of intelligence and not power. On that hole you have a better shot at birdie by laying up. The risk to drive the green is just too high. A left hander has a better shot here to drive it but still that hole is surround by traps.

When I was watching it they were defining success as driving the green. They weren't including the birdies made by drives that ran through the green or stopped just short of the green.
