It’s a 285 yard par 4 which is easily reachable for all of them, yet most of them seem to be laying up and I don’t understand it.

Here is a look at the hole

Looking at the layout, the biggest issue of going for it for these guys would be those bunkers, but they don’t mind hitting out of bunkers. Yea there’s tree issues right and water way left, but for such a driveable hole there aren’t a hole lot of obstacles if you hit a good shot and 285 is an easy driver or less than driver for most of these guys.

I get the idea of risk/reward and that these guys are great with wedges, it just seems like not a lot of risk for a lot of reward

ETA: as I’m typing this Justin Thomas drove the green with an iron and gave himself a 30 ft eagle putt, seems like most of them would be trying to do that

The numbers are showing the guys that laid up are fairing better.

Yea I understand it just seems like a fairly easy shot for a tour pro without a ton of risk, if you just hit a decent shot you almost guarantee birdie. I guess if your goal is just make the weekend you hit short iron then wedge and guarantee no worse than par. I just feel like on a Friday your goal would be get as low as possible for the weekend

Interesting. Where are you seeing those stats? I’m curious what the split is of guys who have gone for it and laid up

They just showed it when Tiger was coming through. I don't have a link or anything.

Gotcha, I wonder if a few guys missed bad and blew up.

I mean it’s not a shocker that these guys know more than I do

Hell I’d probably go for that green.... who knows what would happen though

I believe it was either 15 successful attempts out of 94, or 15 successful and 94 unsuccessful. Success being marked as birdie or better.

I get your argument, but the counter is you are in the bunker if you miss left, trees if you miss right, and could have a really difficult putt if you go long. If you lay up, you have a very easy tee shot, and then you have an approach shot that these guys are incredible at for a short birdie putt.

Interesting, I guess the rough on that course is pretty nasty

285 is also kind of a weird distance for most of these guys.

I bet we see more attempts with a back pin placement.

Well, if you’re trying to hit a fade and either hit it straight or double cross it, you’re making double.

You have to play a fade obviously which eliminates a lot of the field. A draw player who tries a fade and double crosses is going to end up in the water or rough left.

So if you do play fade, you have probably a 30% chance to make birdie going for it. Alternatively, probably 50% laying up. These are guesses but probably close.

JT was at the cut line so I can see why he would try to make something happen. But the rest of them are trying to avoid a 6 vs make a 3. That will likely change over the weekend.

Clearly not a golfer at any sort of level.

If you try to fade a shot in there and block it... very easy to do.

Then what? Hope it comes out of the trees then you have a pitch under trees and over a bunker to a tucked pin? Good luck getting a 30 foot birdie look outta there... you said the bunkers don’t scare them.... well it appears those would equate to 30-50 yard bunker shots... worst shot in golf...

All to flex your dick and drive a green? Amateur

Easily? You are OB left and dead right.

Did you see the shot JT had to pull off to put on that green? A left to right piss stinger that runs up the right way up to the green.

They must trust their perfect wedge number more than a 285 yard cut.

A tour pro with a dialed in wedge is no worse than 15 to 20 feet.
Many of their wedges are inside 10 feet.

The guys leading the pack may jar it or get it to almost kickin range.

I think the pin yesterday was in that front little knob. Easier for these guys to hit a high lofted club from farther away into that spot rather than deal with an awkward green side shot from the bunkers or thick rough.

a wedge out of the grass is more accurate than a wedge out of the sand?
