Did they cite criminal behavior or did they cite violations of their bylaws?

Yea because that's how he wanted to obtain that bragging right.

Yeah I'm not sure how this works. Some people say it's still a loss, but how can one be a loser if there was no winner. It would make more sense if the game was wiped out of the records books altogether and basically never happened.
It doesnt make sense to change the records of every single team Penn State played. It definitely should still count as a loss.... the most confusing thing to me, is saying stuff like "is it an OOC loss?" I mean, it is definitely a loss... but it isn't to a team...soo...I dunno.
I guess it is a loss because it wasn't to an SEC team...but still.. there was no team.

The point is, the NCAA has no business an anything related to criminal behavior.
PSU signed off on the sanctions, these were close to being self-imposed.

This will have a more dramatic effect on PSU because of the 65 scholly max, the 4 year bowl ban, and allowing players to transfer freely.
I mean I agree it's a stiff penalty and they won't be relevant for at least 10 years...but it's only 1 year more than USC. I expected it to be more I guess.

PSU signed off on it so under the authority PSU gave them.
Link?
If they did great, as long as it means other member institutions would have to do the same before accepting punishments.
However,
Accepting them because you don't think you can withstand the public outrage is more like blackmail then signing off.

If you have an extra-marital affair and cover it up...and break a few laws in the process.
The NCAA has now said, we've opened the Pandora's Box and can vacate your wins for the season or period that you had the affair.
Why not? Anything deemed immoral in their words is now fair game. And all of you people think this only affects Penn State.

However, not NCAA is in the business of policing schools and making sure they do the "right thing" instead of keeping the playing field level for competing schools.
This, since when did the NCAA become the enforcer of federal law?

The point is, the NCAA has no business an anything related to criminal behavior. That's not their jurisdiction.
They weren't punishing criminal behavior, were punishing a failure to report(consistently and frequently over 15year) an action( anal raping of minors occurring on campus in a football locker room) that violated morality clauses in the NCAA constitution and by laws.

People will still be mad if they win.

@CharlesRobinson: Penn State signing "consent decree" is NCAA-speak. What it means is that PSU was fully on board. These are basically self-imposed penalties.

Emmert said Penn State signed off on it. There will be no court fight.

Yeah the 75/65 total is a big difference...didn't think about that.

Does Bill O'Brien stay on as coach? He had to see this coming.

It all really depends on how many of their best players leave. Given the timing of the punishments, they may be able to hold on to a lot of them that would have left had this been announced a few months ago.
The 4 year bowl ban will hurt as very few top players will want to go play at a place that is going to be crippled by scholly reductions and have no opportunity to play for any kind of bowl or championship.
Additionally, with the stigma around the program, players and coaches will just choose to go elsewhere.
This potentially could make them as irrelevant as SMU was after it got the DP.

that public outrage is going to be there any way. No way to avoid it they will have to cope with that for decades to come.

The pitchfork mob wouldn't allow PSU to move on if they asserted their rights and fought this unprecedented moral punishment regarding football outside of student athlete enforcement.
