Pebble Beach #14. Your Thoughts?

Lots of discussion on whether or not this hole is "fair". I believe there were 6 or 8 triple bogeys or worse yesterday.
The actual area you can safely land the ball on it is about 5 X 5.
A certain part of me likes the fact that it really challenges the pros to be ultra precise or pay a steep price. However a landing area that small that results in your ball ending off the green is a bit troublesome. your thoughts?

It's the U.S. Open...the best of the best...they can do it any day of the week...but if they can do it in the U.S. Open, that makes you CHAMPION

I think it crosses the line, there really wasn't a bail-out spot yesterday, any tough hole should provide a bail-out, it may cost you a bogey but it should be available

One of the worst holes I have ever seen!

That's the problem. The bail out spot yesterday was long right. You're not going to see a pro bail out that far when they're hitting approach shots from 60-100 yds.
Not to mention if you bailed out long right you would have a hell of a chip/putt that could easily go off the green if you hit it off line.
In the end everyone has to deal with it and I enjoy seeing these guys have some of the struggles that an everyday player goes through...but it's never fun to watch a guy chip back and forth a across a green like that.

For me fair is everyone has to play the hole four times. No gets to skip it. To me that's fair. I'm good with 14.
Not sure what the players are saying about the hole but pro golfers are the biggest whiners around. They ought to have to play some of the courses we play.
Adjust and overcome and quit bitching. I heard Tiger was whining long and hard yesterday.
Nicklaus used to say he would start scratching the names of the guys off who'd start bitching about the course as contenders for the title.

i have no problem with it. its the U.S. Open. hit a good shot or pay the price.

Exactly.
If your strategy is to make four 5's I think you can probably find a bail out area every day assuming you hit a good lay-up. If your strategy is to make four 4's then you are asking for trouble.

Driver, 3 wood and two putt, whats the big deal.

As long SOME people shoot under par on it, it won't change. It doesn't need to.

Hardest hole I've ever played and that was without it being tricked up for the Open. They told me what all they were going to do to it and it sounded impossible. I got home in two one day and then six putted, then the next day I took an 8 while putting a massive dent in someone's house.

I think it's still fair at this point. If you hit an amazing shot, you can get the ball to stop there. Where it could get out of control is if the green dries up
It's not to the point of being like that par 3 at Shinnecock, which was ridiculous and got out of the control of the USGA

That's the point. You can hit a good shot and still be penalized. That's always been the big gripe. You shouldn't be penalized for hitting a good shot. Like someone else said though, everyone has to play the same hole so that in itself makes it fair.

Exactly, IMHO fair is the same conditions for everyone.
I don't remember the major or the course but I can recall a few years back in one major where they started watering the green mid-round.
Now one could argue that was just maitaining the green to the way it played earlier in the day as the afternoon heat was baking the green and making it harder than earlier in the day...but that opens a whole new can of worms.
Ultimately someone manages the difficulties better than everyone else and wins and those who don't are left to complain about inequities.

because something beyond your control like a gust of wind can make it a crapshoot - it crosses the line between challenging and too influenced by chance
