re: Pay to Play Act becomes Law in California

The law doesn't force or even authorize universities to pay players. Instead, it prohibits the universities from enforcing any rule preventing an athlete from earning compensation for name, image, and likeness rights. In other words, allows players to profit off their own NIL same as any other student or person without consequences from the school. Think of it like the olympic model where IOC doesn't hardly pay olympic athletes crap, but Michael Phelps and the female gymnasts can make a bunch of money from Gatorade or Wheaties on the side. It's simply about players -- on the side and on their own time -- getting paid for their value on the market, like any other student.
of course the NCAA could still enforce its eligibility rules...and still penalize universities (including giving them the death penalty) if they don't adhere to the bylaws.

It's on a downward spiral now... please tell me how this will kill it.

What do you think that will do for the brand of big time college athletics? Its going to kill it.
I can see a coach in a kids home recruiting him right now...Some "Johnny 5-star"...I can hear the pitch now:
"If you come to my school, I have a car dealing willing to give you a 100,000 endorsement deal to show up and do commercials for him....Just sign here"
The sad thing is that would probably be legal in California

As a consumer of today's product, I love today's setup and I don't want any changes that would interfere with it. As it sits, all major conference teams have a chance to compete for the most part. I don't want the best teams to be determined by who can spend the most money.
Clemson is a pretty good example. They are winning because they are simply doing it better. I wouldn't want a program like Clemson to be at a disadvantage to Texas, or Notre Dame, etc. just because their boosters have more money to spend.
The more level the playing field, the better off we as consumers are.

That is exactly right. Clemson would not stand a chance against Georgia, Alabama, Penn State, Notre Dame and Texas.
It would be the equivalent of the NFL with no salary cap. Richest teams would win almost every time. It would be a worse product than the NFL and would turn off enough people that the sport and its revenues would shrink.

This is about students letting them make money on enforcement deals etc. on their own. Not about schools paying them to come play. Now could it be a dirty scheme where schools pay players to come. Yes, but that has been going on for a while.
Lets just see how it plays out.

CFB revenue is as high as it has ever been.
Part of the college football brand value is amateurism. We all understand that most of these kids are working harder than most adults at 9-5 jobs, but the degree and the way they get developed to potentially be NFL ready is worth a lot of money.

So what would be so wrong with it? Johnny 5 star is probably only choosing between 3-5 schools anyway. What if a small school could swing it and he went there and won and improved the small school?
What if he flamed out a big school and he got a $100,000 from some crappy car dealership for going to a school he would have gone to anyway.
Who really cares?

and how would that change? Just bc a wide received got paid 1k to be in a Tuscaloosa Menswear commercial?

There is a difference with a couple dirty schools going rogue and NCAA sanctioned paying players. Its already been stated multiple times that once you open the door to be paid for your likeness, you can easily line up boosters to buy items that will funnel money directly to the players.

AJ Green got suspended 4 games for selling his jersey while the UGA official team store featured #8 jerseys on it's website.

I'm pretty sure the NCAA rules and regulations aren't subject to the approval of CA politicians.
CA is trying to force the issue. But I think the most likely result is that the NCAA rules every player ineligible (that gets paid) which results in a breakup of the NCAA. The CA schools can go form their own association.

You are either the most naive person to opine on the subject, or you just are willfully ignorant.

Wonder what the NCAA will think when Urban takes the USC job. Alienate the west coast?

so?

So everybody loves capitalism until a college kid makes a little money.
In reverse, so what if AJ Green sells his likeness and makes money?

It would change the brand of CFB.
It wouldn't be about an athlete getting paid $1k to be a in a commercial. It would be about boosters paying kids millions of dollars to buy a championship.
My proposal would be this - force the NFL to develop a minor league system like MLB. Allow kids out of high school to join the league and be paid. Allow college players to be eligible to be drafted into the minor league system.
CFB would shrink in popularity, but at least it would be a more honest way of doing things.

So what if I want to pay Mr. 5 star a million dollars in endorsement deals if he signs with my school? The issue I would have with it personally and a lot of other college football fans is it would take away any interest in the sport.

So all the recruits will commit to California schools now?
