If it weren't for all that stadium renovation debt I doubt they'd give a rip about football.

You don't take the stadium renovation that put them into debt as a sign of giving a rip about football?

One was against Arizona State where they tried to center the ball for a field goal and ended up running out of time.

I remember that play and Wisconsin not getting to clock it had way more to do w/the horrible reffing that happened after the QB downed the ball. The refs just casually stood there while they let the ASU player lay on the ball.

Corvallis and Pullman are not dumpy places.

Been to both for games they are the worst.

Night game tailgating outside of Reser - the parking lots were full of people standing around oil drums full of fire warming their hands. Beer of choice you saw around the stadium was Natty Ice.

I had a friend who went to Washington State - he said they used to drive to Moscow, Idaho for entertainment and to have a good time as it was more happening than Pullman.

Moscow has a population of about 22,000 people.

Both those places make Lincoln, Nebraska (where I've also been) look like Paris.

Andersen's decision stunned former Utah coach Ron McBride, a close friend of his ex-Ute player and assistant coach. McBride, though, described Andersen as “kind of depressed, looking for answers” after having attended OSU's recent 42-7 loss to No. 5 Washington.

quote:

Barnes labeled Andersen's waiving his contract as“unprecedented in college athletics” and an illustration of “an honorable person.” In his statement, Andersen said,“Coaching is not about the mighty dollar.”

quote:

Counting this season, Andersen will have been paid a total of about $11 million in the five years since he left Utah State, where his top salary was $415,000. He went 19-7 in two years at Wisconsin before making an unusual move to Oregon State.

Andersen, 53, cited familiarity with the West and a college setting that reminded him of Logan to explain the move, while biting off a major rebuilding job with a staff that included some of his former Utah State assistants. Kalani Sitake, now BYU’s head coach, and Ilaisa Tuiaki, the Cougars’ defensive coordinator, also were part of his original OSU staff.

I doubt that. They are not dumps and never heard them described that way. Was in Corvallis a couple of weekends ago; still not a dump.

Adjectives for Pullman: remote, small
Adjectives for Corvallis: wet (Oct. thru May)

Man, that guy fell hard, fast.

it's really odd. he turned Utah state, which for as long as I can remember was equivalent to New Mexico State and Idaho (basically the 2 worst fbs programs) into the best G5 team for one year.

That ASU game ending I will never get over.

Andersen has proven to be wayyy over his head as a HC.
But he preside over a lot of wins and Gordon's 400 yard game.

On the other hand was the OSU debacle and the stupid experiment at QB which may have cost us another LSU win.

Just a bad fit for Madison. He didn't get the culture at all.

They're probably fairly nice small towns if you want to raise a family there. For bigtime college football purposes they're dumps though.

I would venture Wazzu and OSU are the most difficult places to recruit and be successful. Oregon produces almost no D1 talent...Wazzu is a wasteland for star black athletes - way worse than the Packers were in trying to get black free agents in the 80's. Way worse than Lincoln, Nebraska in getting Cali or Southern talent.

Not many kids want to move to Mayberry in the Northwest and live in towns that are grandma and grandpa driving an Edsel and they are looked at as outlanders.

That are in decent proximity to large metro areas full of FBS level recruits.

Oregon State isn't a very attractive job.

Beautiful place, nice campus, lots to like about it, but it is a small town environment, and Oregon is not a fertile recruiting ground. You have to have people that can recruit in California, Texas and Florida in order to make that program successful.

Mike Reilly was the perfect coach for that school, until they got all uppity and ran him out on a rail.

I regularly forget that Iowa State exists.

I don't. They're responsible for the decline of LSU football.

Based on Oregonian story with some Andersen texts there's nothing nefarious behind the scenes he was just pissed off and done with the whole situation.
LINK

quote:

Andersen (Sept. 20): "I hired the wrong (expletive) guys and are still working our way through a bunch of recruiting years that stunk!! It's year three! If these (expletives) can't get it right I will not just say fire them and start over!! That's not the way to go about it. If I (expletive) it up that bad I will take the bullet and ride off into the sunset! I will stay old school!! I will not die doing this (expletive)!! Stay tuned!"

Wonder if he ever coaches again.

Based on those texts it sucks that he didn't have a Pete Bell presser on the way out.
