Making the tournament at all is light years better than the NIT. This is like asking would you rather lose out in the college football playoff or win the music city bowl

That was probably fine 30 to 50 years ago

The 2000s weren't 30-50 years ago.

I wouldn't mind taking a trip to see my team play in Madison Square Garden with a mediocre banner on the line.

Have they signed a contract for this yet? Last year and this year MSG didn't/won't host the Semi's and title game. And they were taking solicitations from other venues last I checked.

IMO, I think the NCAA Tournament is the most fun sporting event of the year.

I was at UF from 2005-2009. 3rd generation Gator. Massive Gator football ban. Yet hard to imagine anything topping winning the college basketball title, let alone back to back. Such a thrilling experiences

Winning the NIT is being the #1 loser.

I would rather win the NIT than lose the play in

Winning a game in the tournament >>> winning the NIT though

this is the right answer IMO, but it also depends on so much. im thinking of UGA, who has done neither of these things in basically my entire life. in years when we make the NIT, i actually watch and care.

HOWEVER, we have not made the tournament in basically 10 years. being on the bubble, missing the tourney, and then winning the NIT would be fricking devastating. we NEED to make the tournament.

if you were a decent regular in the tourney and in one of your near miss rebuilding years, then you won the NIT, i think that would be a lot more palatable.

if you are a final four contending level program, you don't want to miss the tournament and you don't give a shite about the NIT.

this is a boring "it depends" answer, but

Wisconsin was in the NIT for the first time in my lifetime last year, and I couldn’t have cared less. They only made the semis but I would have for sure rather had them make the tourney then win the NIT

All teams would much rather got to the dance, and NIT a 2nd rate tourney

Going to the Sweet 16 is a big deal. Winning the NIT is no deal at all.
