Steve Axman now named interim coach
quote:

FootballScoop has learned Steve Axman will join the staff at Nicholls State. Sources tell us he will be the interim head coach and is on the ground in Thibodaux now.

Axman has an extensive coaching history, with four decades in the game as an assistant, coordinator, and head coach across college football, and with a stint in the USFL. He is generally known as a creative play-caller and an accomplished quarterbacks coach, claiming Troy Aikman and Marques Tuaisasopo among his former pupils.

The head-scratcher – none of his experience is in the South, and Nicholls State is extremely southern. Axman most recently coached at Idaho, and has experience at UCLA, Montana, Washington, Minnesota, Northern Arizona, Maryland, Stanford, Arizona, Illinois, Army, Albany State, East Stroudsburg (Pa.) State, and with the USFL’s Denver Gold.

quote:

"Under the circumstances, this is the best solution that we could hope for as a temporary replacement," Nicholls athletic director Rob Bernardi said. "Steve is an expert in quarterback play. I think this gives us the best opportunity to move forward and have success for this season."

Hell, Bernardi wanted to go with Charlie Stubbs because he felt that was the best solution over the three previous finalists that ended up being a cluster frick. Hopefully history does not repeat itself.

It just seems like an odd move to bring someone in from the outside to be the interim coach. I believe Axman is in his late 60s and even retired a few years ago, so I hope this really is just for the rest of the season.

They need to quit running the wishbone offense or whatever the hell they been doing where all they do is run the ball and there qb is basically a rb and cant' throw. That's what high schools do, not colleges.

College Football Teams that are currently or have been Option Teams

As you Can see, Option Football Teams have quite a bit of success. Navy has had much success the last 10 years, Air Force under Fisher DeBerry had a great amount of success, GA Tech is not a world beater but can jump up and bite you on the arse if your not on your P's and Q's. GA Southern was a 1-AA Beast, and went into the Swamp Last year and put up over 400 yards rushing on an SEC Elite team. Nichols would benefit from having the Flexbone playbook dusted off and implemented once again. I am all in favor of Guys like Jabbar Juluke getting a hard look

What's Mickey Joseph up to these days? He used to be on the coaching staff in the early 2000's.

Steve Axman now named interim coach

According to the Daily Comet, Steve Axman is a close friend of Rob Bernardi's brother. It is all starting to make sense now. Don't want this to be a reflection on the new coach because he does have a very good resume. Sound familiar? Looks like the AD might be up to some old tricks again.

Makes sense, I figured he had to have some kind of ties to someone there.

For those who mentioned bebe

They have success because it's unusual in FBS and it bridges major talent gaps.
But Nicholls shouldn't have a talent gap. It's not like there is some inherent reason why they will get inferior players to S Eastern or McNeese.

I guess Orgeron's done the interim thing and it didn't help his career much so there was no point in doing it here.
Somebody's going to give him a head coaching job - I would think. He's kind of risky though.

You are spot on with this. Dr. Hulbert completely hand picked Stubbs. Would Monica or Jackson apply again?

Rumor has it that the mormons in town made a big push for Stubbs.

Another article on the hire with some more Bernardi quotes
quote:

He (Orgeron) respectfully declined because he made a commitment to his wife that he would stay out the entire year and he wanted to honor that commitment.

quote:

Will Axman be a candidate to remain the head coach for next season?
Bernardi said, “No, I think that’s one of the benefits of it. He’s built his resume. Ax loves college football. He saw us in a need and there was an opportunity for him and a desire to come in here and help us complete our season. At the end of it, he can go back to his wife in Arizona and enjoy his family and have done our program well. It is mutually beneficial.”

Guy LeCompte, Mandeville. Runs a wide open spread and brings his team to the semi's with a wide open spread on average Nothshore white boy talent. He has ties to Orgeron who lives in Mandeville also... Great hire! Open it up and throw the damn ball puts asses in the seats not that run run run and punt crap...

When Stubbs took over in 2010, they put in a pro style/spread offense. Their pass attempts for the first three games this year were 31, 43, and 40.

Yep...as I posted 3 days ago:

quote:

They stopped that when Stubbs came in 2010. He's a pro-style, spread-ish offense. I was fine giving him a few years of poor performance given that the offensive roster when he took over was suited for a triple-option attack. It was going to take time to get the players he needed to run his offense effectively. This was his 5th year at the school so he has "his players" there now. That obviously hasn't worked.

And can we at least get the name of the school corrected in the thread title? Our football program is embarrassing enough already.

Supposedly a similar situation is what got us stuck with that piece of crap Jerry Baldwin as our head football coach. The story is that both Larry Blakely (now HC at Troy) and Scelfo (was OC at Tulane) both had an interest in the head job at ULL.

Martin Hall (President Authement and VP Blanco) had different plans than our athletic department. Authement and Blanco are the ones who decided we would hire Baldwin. There's much speculation, which I definitely believe, that the decision was completely about politics and had nothing to do with the football program. Blanco's wife would soon be a candidate for Governor, and he and Authement figured the hire, making Baldwin at that time the only DI-A black head coach.

So in other words, good luck with the coaching search if you've got all that political bullshite to deal with.
