Because it creates confusion among the casual fan, as has already happened in this thread.

The hornet brand may have a stronger connection to Charlotte but it had been associated with new orleans for a decade. Building a new brand while your old brand has been co-opted by a competitor just seems like it'd be harder to do with casual fans than a clean break to a new name would have done.

Not quite as good as the original pinstriped unis from the original franchise

The original jerseys will still be utilized on throwback nights with the team

nba writers were still confusing the New Orleans hornets with the charlotte hornets in our last year with that name. i'd be willing to bet more people associate the hornets with charlotte than nola. I see absolutely no reason we shouldn't have allowed them to have their name back except to be total assholes

Those are great. I think the away and alternate unis actually look better without the pinstripes.

Pretty solid, although with tealish one, I'd like to see white #s, with the white letters. Overall, very good.

The Utah Bees

It's the Beehive State, you know.

Doesnt sound any worse than "Hornets".

there is alot of bobcats or could call them the cougars.

Just think about it:
Utah Cougars
New Orleans Jazz (even though I love Pelicans)
Charolette Hornets

how are they able to have an alternate?

I thought you couldn't introduce an alternate until after atleast the first season, which is why we didn't wee a red or gold uni for the pelicans.

The LA Lakers vs the Utah Salt Lakers.

As for the Hornet confusion it'll pass over time. It's not like the Hornet name was in NOLA for decades and then just appeared somewhere else. People will forget over time that the Pelicans are the original Hornet franchise in the similar way that people forget that the original Cleveland Browns are actually the Baltimore Ravens.

How's this for confusion?

When the Bobcats changed their name to the Hornets, they then assumed the history from the Charlotte years (1988-2002) of the franchise that is the Charlotte/OKC/New Orleans Hornets/Pelicans.

That's right. The History of the Pelicans franchise from 88-02, now belongs to a franchise that didn't exist until 2004. So the Pelicans franchise has existed since 1988 and has a record book dating back to 2002, the Bobcats have existed since 2004 and have a record book dating back to 1988.

ETA: So if the Pelicans franchise had won a NBA title before moving to New Orleans, I guess it would have been stripped and the Bobcats could throw themselves a parade.

Yeah the Browns / Ravens made it easy. When the team moved to Baltimore they agreed to leave the name and the history books in Cleveland for whenever they got another team so the Ravens started with a clean slate, almost as if they were an expansion team.

Not that there are a whole lot between the two but imagine the guys who have to send the achievement banners from 1 city to another. They must be so confused about who gets what.

Its stupid IMO. It doesn't matter if their name is the Charlotte Hornets now, they aren't the same franchise that used to play there. Its really weird that they've taken on that history, simply because they changed their name to something more nostalgic.

Those uniforms look sharp and I'm glad that Charlotte got the Hornets name back. That was the first major sports team in the Carolinas and they were really popular back in the day.

(I'm a big fan of the Pelicans name and logo also, FWIW...IMO everyone is better off w/ NOLA giving the Hornets name back to Charlotte and creating a new brand for itself).

I do think it would have been cool if at least one version of the unis had the pinstripes.

So Chris Paul and David West were never Hornets? They were retroactive Pelicans?
