But this is not how it would work in Basketball. The IOC wants the NBA superstars to play, David Stern does not. The only U-23 team would be the US.

David Stern could influence this rule change, but ultimately it's USA Basketball's decision. Stern is not a member of the board for USA basketball, and could only recommend this ridiculous U23 roster provision.

Pretty much. You're effectively hamstringing yourself against the rest of the world. And giving guys only one shot to be on a team (two at the most).

Everyone, I'm the OP. My apologies for not posting the link. I edited my original post and provided a link to an article that addressed the issue in more detail. Looks like this would only apply to the USA. I'm definitely against that. Here's the link again: Possible NBA Olympic age limit

Both FIBA, basketball's world governing body, and USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo have said they don't want to discuss any proposed changes until after London, though it seems they would be unhappy with the timing.

This is the big thing. FIBA and USA basketball could ignore the mandate from the NBA, and still let overage players compete.

As Keys mentioned, it would also greatly diminish the competitiveness of European teams that feature many NBA players. The only teams that could compete with the young Americans would be the Balkans countries and possibly Lithuania, (i.e. countries with historical success in amateur basketball).

The NBA and FIBA need to come together and create a World Cup of basketball. That way the parent clubs of teams can be compensated.

They basically have that with the FIBA World Championships.

USA won it in 2010.

This is basically the idea proposed by Stern and Cuban.

I assume that leagues have much more bargaining power over FIFA, UEFA, &an FIBA than they do over the IOC, when it comes to revenue sharing

The IOC isn't going to share shite. They're more corrupt than even FIFA. I think the NBA, FIBA, and all the other federations could come together to put on a badass basketball tournament where all the clubs can profit from the use of their players.

Right, that's my assumption on the IOC. But how do FIFA, UEFA, and the top leagues share profits for the international tournaments?

I'd be for it if you pushed the age limit up to 28.

The worst debacle was when the US WC team in Indy, forgot the year and I think every player was over 23. 04 Olympics was a scam as all the "good" players backed out and AI was only one left and Brown did not know his roster until week before, but they still won a bronze. FIBA will make it U23 I am thinking if the NBA and NBAPA decide they arent going to play nice with them, FIBA needs Stern and he knows it.

soccer tourneys are different when you have the best players from the EPL, La Liga, Serie A, and Bundesliga (and Eredivisie, and SPL, and Ligue 1, and J-League, and Campeanato Brassilero, and FMF, and MLS) on an even playing field with each other

if you were to have a world championship of basketball without anyone from the NBA?
