Not a fan of the stalling penalty in wrestling.

Imagine if this penalty was in play when Larry Zbyszko was competing…

Gardner scored because Karelian broke his grip.

quote:

Back then when the match ended in a tie they did a clinch. Since Karelin broke his grip first he had to try for a move or Rulon would win by default/criteria. So that's basically what happened. Rulon didn't do much offensively throughout the match but he got the win against one of the greatest Greco-Roman wrestlers of all time.

NGL, this has been much more entertaining than the NCAA tournament.

I may be crazy, but between the atmosphere and the commentary, etc, these finals are the best broadcast event I have seen on ESPN in ages.

Having Cormier on the call is one of the big reasons, but the entire arena is just one of the best events I can remember. Everything about it is just classy, but also incredibly pure athletics at the same time.

Would legit pay to go to this event one day.

Basically, takedowns and escapes have a point value it you hit them in a match.

Freestyle Olympic wrestling is tyocislly considered more fun to watch because there's more scoring and not nearly as much ground fighting.

There's also a reason they always said high level NCAA wrestlers made such good UFC/MMA fighters, because there is so much ground grappling involved versus other styles, therfore it prepares them better.

God dang that HW match was badass. Wyatt coming out to Copperhead Road. The last second takedown using all his strength. Saluting President Trump. Incredible.

Amazingly, Steveson won his gold medal in similar fashion. He scored a takedown with only seconds left after trailing.

Escape is 1 pt
Reversal is 2pt
Takedown is 3 pt

Nearfall points are given when you have an opponents back exposed to the mat at a 45 degree angle or less. You can earn up to 4 pts depending on how long you can keep them there. If youre able to get both shoulders down, its a fall (pin) and the match is over.

Never understood this sport until we put my 5 year old son in wrestling back in 2019 and now i absolutely love it. We had the kids folkstyle state tournament in baton rouge yesterday, and Friday night the Hilton hotel lobby and bar had the NCAA wrestling tournament on every TV and the place was full of wrestlers and coaches. It was an absolute blast.

It's such an improvement that they moved takedown to 3. Up to this year, takedown were only 2, which made no sense.

I still think a reversal for only 2 points is stupid, but whatever.

Wrestling season isn't over, now there's a transition from folkstyle to freestyle. Folkstyle is hs and college; freestyle is the standard for international competition. I also love me some Greco-Roman.

One of my friends here in Oklahoma has a son that made it to the Nationals. He was seeded in an All American position (top 8 seed), but didn't win in the Blood Round when needed, so he didn't All American.

Here's hoping for next year for him.

That's why you keep wrestling the entire match...

My son wrestles, I'm constantly telling him to wrestle till the end. In his tournament last week, he got a takedown on a kid with 3 seconds left to go on and win his match. I'd rather see him win like that than pin a kid.

That's the thing about wrestling, you can be down 14 nill, and still beat your opponent.

Carmier is hilarious when his voice gets all high pitched with excitement. He's actually like that in person, I had the chance to meet him when Rummel wrestled his team in an exhibition dual last season before the classic.

It starts at about the 50 second mark of the video above.

Steveson embarrassed himself acting like winning a gold medal in the Olympics gives him the right to question the patriotism of an actual Air Force veteran, which Hendrickson is.

Is he considered an actual veteran since he is still in? He still has to fulfill his 8 years, right?

Steveson did act like a clown.

What an ending, 2nd biggest moment ever for me in wrestling behind Dake vs Taylor.
Like someone else said we need push outs like they do in international.
And a point deduction for failed challenges. Seems like every big score is contested, coaches are even using them for time outs now….so much for cardio being important.

The difference of atmosphere of an Iowa bball game and wrestling dual at Carver Hawkeye Arena is night and day.

Your friends dad also had the balls to tell bully Bob Knight to FAFO after an incident. Bobby heeded his advice...
