The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved a tweak to college football’s overtime rules. Moving forward, if a game advances to a fifth overtime, the teams will run alternating two-point plays instead of regaining possession from the 25-yard line like in prior overtime periods.

The NCAA already requires teams to attempt a 2-point conversion (instead of an extra point) starting in the third overtime. Think of this new change as college football’s version of penalty kicks.

The new rule, the NCAA says, was passed in an effort to “limit the number of plays from scrimmage and bring the game to a conclusion.” As part of the change, the NCAA is instituting two-minute rest periods after the second and fourth overtimes.

In addition to the overtime tweak, the panel approved two changes to the controversial targeting rules.

Starting with the upcoming season, penalties for targeting will either be confirmed or overturned. There will be no more plays where a call on the field “stands” like in a situation where a replay review is ultimately inconclusive.

In the past, if instant replay officials could not conclusively state that targeting occurred, a play ruled targeting on the field would “stand” and the player would be ejected. Only targeting fouls confirmed by replay will be upheld. The update to the rule removes the middle ground.

“If any element of targeting cannot be confirmed, the replay official will overturn the targeting foul,” the NCAA said.

Additionally, the panel ruled that players who accrue three targeting penalties in the same season will face a one-game suspension. Players already receive ejections for targeting and are suspended for the first half of the following game if the targeting foul occurs in the second half.

A&M/LSU was just too much for the pearl clutchers running the NCAA to handle.

And then if it goes to a 6th overtime, the teams will pick a card and the highest wins.

Never thought CFB rules committee would be like..."ya know the 25-yard line is too far away, too much football like variables including defense...let's shorten the field to two-yards and may the best offensive line win."

This is what happens when the general public just blindly decides that ties are an unacceptable outcome. They'd rather have a 'winner' determined by absolute bullshite than a tie apparently.

If you can't conclude a game mostly under its normal rules and have to invent some sort of carnival game to try to resolve it, it should have ended in a tie.

Seems like there would be a TON of wasted time. Almost like the end of an NBA game where all we get are fouls and free throws.

At least we'd get more sweet commercials, so we have that going for us

Totally agree but people don't want that so what can you do?

Ugh, why can't they just go common sense with this stuff. Keep OT the same, but start from the 35 yard line.

Best OT system:

You have the lead and possession of the ball and the game is over, you win. Keep all the rules the same as regulation and follow that scheme. It’s fair and isn’t wonky as shite.

If they’re going this route, why not force the teams to kick extra points only? Each team starts kicking from the 20 yard line and has to move back 10 yards with each round. The winner is the team with the best kicker.

It’s not like they’re actually playing football at that point. Might as well try to keep the soccer fans as viewers.

There's never been anything wrong with a tie.

Football existed 100 years with them.

People were fine with it, pollsters saw it as not a win but not a loss and would drop you maybe one or two places in the polls. It wasn't a big deal.

The only big deal tie is 1966 in the original "Game of the Century" where people accused Notre Dame of playing for a tie at the end because they were #1 in the polls and Michigan State was #2 in the polls and a tie wouldn't hurt Notre Dame.

But Notre Dame caught so much flak from the press that sandbagging at the end of a game to preserve a tie was never going to be a strategy going forward.

For those that don't know the story:

The Spartans were looking for another national championship and everything’s going smoothly. They are 9-0 on the season, ranked No. 2 in the nation and their final game is coming up against No. 1 Notre Dame, who are 8-0. In fact, this game was the first meeting between the Associated Press poll’s 1 and 2 teams since the poll began in 1936.

1:30 left in a 10-10 game and Notre Dame has the ball at their own 30.

Notre Dame didn’t even TRY for the win. They sat on the ball, calling run play after run play, while Michigan State called timeout after timeout, taunting the Irish during the final 90 seconds.

In a game that saw five fumbles, four interceptions, and 20 rushes that were for either no gain or went backwards for negative yardage. And while you’d expect it from the teams, you wouldn’t expect it from the coach. But Parseghian didn’t think much of his offense and didn’t want to give MSU a chance to steal a win out of a tie. In the end, Michigan State and Notre Dame split the national title in 1966.

A tie is much better than alternating 2pt conversions.

Just start OT from the 50 and be done with it

In theory, I like this.

The burden should be on the video to find indisputable proof that targeting occurred.

We'll see how it actually works in the field.
