Yep, even seemed lazy when he was at Villanova, but that was just the start

He won't work on his weight and couldn't ever show up on time last year. VC and Baze talked about him in a joking way on their pod.

I haven't liked Atlanta's off-season at all.

Why? They're setting up to go into next offseason with about 68 million and Trae Young, John Collins, Kevin Heurter, D'Andre Hunter, Cam Reddish, and Bruno Fernando all on rookie deals. They're taking a chance on Jabari Parker, but they can afford it.

If Fernando and Reddish can get back to what made them coveted recruits coming out of high school, the Hawks are set. Although I don't get how Fernando fell to the second. Will at the very least be fun to watch this year

Not a lot of depth in the post behind Collins though

Prob going to be Len at center with Fernando as the backup. I hope Parker is coming off the bench for Collins at the 4.

I would imagine that would be the case. Len is a good placeholder for Fernando or whoever you pick up next offseason

Yeah, obviously not expecting much this coming season. Atlanta is doing all the right things, IMO. They're trying to build through the draft and hopefully lure someone with a good young core. That's about the only way a team like ATL can go about it.

The Mavs of the East minus the "build through the draft" not including Luka of course

Looking beyond the players they brought in, they did an atrocious job at asset management. Getting Hunter was good, but the cost was significant. The Parker deal doesn't offer much upside. If the experiment works well, good for them, but it's not putting them in contention this early and he will just opt out next summer. If it doesn't work, he's just eating cap this season and next when you could have used that cap is more beneficial ways to acquire assets.

And then it comes to my opinion of the guys they brought. I LOVED their draft last year. This year, I think Cam Reddish is flat out a bad basketball player and I don't think very highly of DeAndre Hunter especially as a #4 pick. I also think it was premature to give up on Spellman so quickly. I do like Bruno though.

Them trading for Turner is probably the one true thing I liked from them this summer. Ironically, I hate Turner as a basketball player, but he's a perfect fit for Atlanta as a secondary ball handler when they want to run Trae and Huerter off ball screens.

I completely disagree. A lot of this depends on how Hunter and Reddish turn out, but you said you don't like them further in your post. ATL still has a ton of picks in 2020 (up to 8).

I think ATL still has around 68 million to spend with Parker opting in.

Spellman is going to have to do a 180 on just his general habits. Overweight, can't show up to things on time. Seems like general laziness.

I don't think Turner will be on the team after this season. I really don't think ATL cares that much about this year.

Having a ton of picks doesn't matter if you don't value them correctly. That's my biggest problem with Atlanta this summer. Ending up with Hunter wasn't a bad thing when you isolate it, but when you look at how they got there, they showed a lack of creativity in truly maximizing those assets.

I didn't realize they had that much in cap, which certainly makes that deal more tolerable.

I still think it's too early to give up on him. There's red flags there, but he's a skilled player who's only been in the league for a year. He can become a contributor with the right voice in his ear.

That's certainly possible. I think Schlenk is mirroring Atlanta to what he helped build in Golden State. Trae and Huerter as Steph and Klay (just stylistically). Turner as a poor man's Iggy to lessen Trae's workload and unlock another element of their offense with Turner as a set-up man. I just wouldn't surprised to see Turner find a home in Atlanta for a few years.

We'll just have to agree to disagree about this. They end up with Hunter, Reddish, and Fernando and also have a ton of picks in the 2020 draft. I think it was more about how many roster spots you have for rookies than anything. They also valued Hunter a lot, so it really depends on how he turns out. Reddish just kinda fell in their lap at 10.

The funny part about the Pistons or Knicks is that they'd still be in no man's land with Russ.

The Heat could at least hope Russ and Butler get them somewhere.

The Pistons would have a far better chance of "getting somewhere" than Miami.
