re: Navy's coach doesn't think his players deserve unsportsmanlike penalties

"It's too critical a part of the game to make a call like that," Niumatalolo said. "You would hope that a referee, in that situation, would just say 'settle down guys.' Both teams are battling hard, and for someone to make a call like that, it hurts."
Of course, I understand this sentiment too.......

has anyone mentioned his daughter yet?

Dude, it's fricking football. Just telling the guy to get the frick out of the way does not mean he is going to be a shitty Ensign in the Navy or Lieutenant in the Marines.

As a future officer in the USN I would expect the player to have teh intestinal fortitude and the wisdom not to put himself in a position to potentially harm his team. No second chances in wartime.
You play like you practice.
What a bunch of horse crap save the cliches for recruiting poster. First of all it only "harms" his team because there is a stupid, highly subjective rule impossed by stuffy bureaucrats at the NCAA. 2nd of all, in hand to hand combat, I'm guess even officers might responding to comments from the enemy.

The taunt in question is at the 8:15 point in slow mo on original CBS broadcast. I'm an AF fan, but man, not sure about that one, but obviously I don't know what was said.

you don't make that call in OT of a close game... in the 2nd quarter or in a blowout, maybe, but otherwise, no

That's pretty weak on the video...
Funny how the announcers talk about the Locker play...nothing will ever be as bad as the Locker call against BYU.

Where are the stats saying more guys get hurt by Navy's "questionable" low blocks? Here's a hint - there aren't any stats.
You'll see somebody playing for a non-option team cut somebody and it's a "great block" (RBs do it in pass protection all the time) but an option team doing it is "dangerous" even though nobody ever seems to get injured from it (at least not any more frequently than from anything else).
A chop block is dangerous because it is done when a player is engaged high by somebody else.
That is why a chop block is illegal but a cut block is not.

It's a stupid rule that cost his team a game, I agree with that part completely.
BUT no you can't have special treatment navy.

I'm not usually one to side with the refs, but he got in 2 players faces and turned 1 of them to trash talk to him. The player is an idiot

He's an idiot because he should know the rule, but in the same thought.. the entire rule is idiotic.. you have 200 18-22 year olds playing a very physical game in front of hundreds of thousands of people. Let them show some freakin emotion.

So when else do the rules count and when do they not?
Bottom line is that the kid shouldn't have done it. You can argue that it should've been called just as easily as you can argue that it shouldn't have. But if the kid doesn't act an arse, it never happens. He brought it upon himself, and hurt his team.

the replay i saw on tv only showed him bumping the initial guy. that seemed inadvertent.
eta: i dont think i'd call that unsportsmanlike conduct in the 2nd quater either honestly.

Check the link someone posted earlier and go to teh 8:10 mark. Shows him bumping that first guy (which was nothing), and then going to another one and kinda turning him and talking shite.
And I'm not arguing that it should've been called or not, that's the ref's decision. But my point is that you can argue it, with evidence, either way. So it's on the kid to not do that shite.

So let’s get this straight. These players are getting hollered at in drills at ungodly hours, they’re screamed at by coaches, and they’re put under intense mental and physical training in preparation to lead men and women into battle, but no, they supposedly can’t handle a wee bit of trash talk after a key touchdown.
There needs to be a different set of rules for officiating games between the service academies. Army, Navy, and Air Force players shouldn’t just be allowed to taunt, they should be forced to. If a player is so soft that his feelings get hurt by a little jawing after a big play, he probably can’t effectively protect a nation.
Why not?

I'm a HUGE Navy fan (seven year Navy veteran). My 2nd favorite team.
The little twerp who got the penalty? Deserved every yard of it.
Yeah, he's a great player who got them down there in the first place, yes. Maybe if he was a TEAM player he should have kept his flippin' gums from flappin'.
