Short track emphasis
The only reason for the "short track emphasis" is because they have started out going to tracks that are within a day's drive of the team shops in and around Concord/Mooresville, and outside of Atlanta/Charlotte/Darlington, the only tracks that fit that distance criteria are the short tracks at Bristol, Martinsville, and maybe Richmond (but they aren't going there yet).

I don't think the emphasis on short tracks will remain once things get back to full swing. They just added Nashville (1.33 mile track) for 2021 and moving forward.

As far as the Flag and being public about their support of racial issues, I ultimately think that is the right side of history to be on and every league in due time will be there.
But the thing is, NASCAR had already "prohibited" the Confederate flag. They were no longer allowed to fly on aerial masts in the infield. As a sanctioning body they refused to let Sterling Marlin run a car that was sponsored by the Sons of Confederate veterans and would have contained the SCV logo (which incorporates the ANV battle flag) on the hood of the car.

This latest ban, I guess, takes into account flags on vehicles, shirts, decals on coolers and vehicles. I'm not sure how they are going to enforce that (are they going to be looking at every car that pulls into the parking lots or the infield? Are they going to tell someone wearing a shirt that contains the flag they have to either remove the shirt or leave the venue?

NASCAR went from this:

To this:

Your Southern "good ole boys", who made up the largest fan demographic, aren't going to continue to watch a sport that abandoned the old Southern tracks for one's in Yankee states, nor do they want to be told what flag they can or can't fly at a tailgate for a race they paid to attend.

Wrong. Miami will have 5k in the stands this weekend. Stop trying so hard to look cool for the douchey rednecks.

What else is on to watch? Even before this, NASCAR couldn't fill the stands at its most famous and historic races. Petty, Earnhardt, Gordon, Stewart and Dale Jr. were famous. How many drivers today could you pick out of a lineup?

Last season's race was also competing against the NBA playoffs, PGA and baseball for TV viewers. Plus last season the races were on weekends without coronavirus restrictions keeping most people at home. Take it with a grain of salt

Correct, the COVID-era races have all been up around 5-10% in ratings from comparable races last year probably for those reasons. No one saw 104% coming, that is purely from the good publicity

Once Bubba Wallace spoke up, nascar panicked. It took the only black driver, who’s been quite irrelevant in his career, to cause nascar to jack it all up and fold.

This is his third season in cup with a team that will never be able to compete for non-plate/ST wins yet more of the sporting world knows his name today than say Kevin Harvick.

Man that fold hurt them so bad, ratings were up 104% from last year's comparable race and up 16% from the last midweek race two weeks ago.

This is great. However, is it sustainable? The problem with NASCAR is the only people who consistently watch are NASCAR fans. I don't think there is enough interest between younger people and the sport to make it as popular as it once was. It's a shame really

It's absolutely not sustainable, no one is arguing that but the fact of the matter is the immediate reaction to the news was overwhelmingly positive as far as the numbers are concerned. Once the series gets back to the bs 1.5 milers the package will kill off some new interest on its own, but it would be intentionally ignorant to insist that some of the new eyes from last night won't stick around.

Not gonna argue that but who knows what the landscape of the sport will look like ten years from now. I've got some really high hopes with the Gen 7 car next season

IMO, new packages, gen7 and schedule shakeup will help. I'm digging the weekday races. They need to continue to work to get the drivers more accessible to the fans so people can be more invested in it

BTW, I'm not arguing that there are definitely more eyeballs on the sport due to the times we are in. Especially last night, half wanted Bubba to wreck and half wanted him to win.

NASCAR became a fad the late 1990s and it was unsustainable at those levels. They went overboard with new tracks and adding seating to existing tracks.

The biggest reason for the decline is probably that millenials are just not into cars like previous generations were. Kind of the same type of thing that's happened to motorcycle sales.

This is a big factor but you can't ignore the old fans whose hearts weren't in it after "their driver" left and didn't want to stick around for all the mid-2000s gimmicks/COT. I'm pretty confident it'll never again reach the popularity levels it had in the 90s but it'll be a long long while for it to "die off" like so many are convinced it will.
