My Son is Dragging me into the Sports Card World

My 7yr old is huge into collecting cards now - has been for close to a year now and has amassed a nice collection of Numbered, Autoed, Shohei's, and former LSU guys.. He's dragged me into this world and I admit its pretty fun. Expensive hobby but its hard to put a value on the level of bonding we are having over it. With that said, I know very little about the selling aspect of sports cards and he wants to try to earn some money by selling all of his mid level ~$1-$10 cards while he continues to build his $10+ collection. Looks like eBay absolutely rapes you with fees on small dollar sales. Has anyone ever sold on Collx?

eBay takes about 13-14% in my experience. Probably the quickest way you can move the cards. It’s also going to get the most eyes on the cards. If the value of the cards is less than $20 choose the plain white envelope shipping option. It costs $1.36. I can’t stand seeing a $5 card for sale with the shipping also costing $5.
You could also join team/player collector groups on Facebook and try there. No fees unless someone pays you PayPal gifts and services which is a 3% fee.

I'm more of a local card shop guy. I, too, was pulled back into the hobby by a kid I'm mentoring through boys & girls club. When he inherited his Grandpa's card collection he was more impressed by the names than curious what the cards are worth.

Just find a vendor that'll give you 50-70% of their value and call it a day.

The few names he does like from that time period are the big names that are probably worth more than just trash cards. He loves MJ, Kobe and Griffey Jr

I don’t have any Jordan or Kobe cards, as I didn’t like them.
But I have a good amount of Ken Griffey Jr cards.

I grew up collecting. Did it again from 01-04, trash years. Came back in 2012-2013 for a stretch and quit permanently in 2021.
It’s a hobby of extremes now with grown up kids dominating the market. It’s turn into an arm of collectibles hobby.
When I was a kid, having a card worth “$20” was a big frickin deal. Topps Finest was $10 a pack and you were a baller if you were able to score a pack.
Packs these days are absurd. The hobby is skewed towards breakers.
The hobby taught me risk and negotiation, which is what I do in my career every day. Buy and sell. So I owe the hobby a lot but it’s not the same.
Fools actually think it’s an investment.

I have heard from others like you that have many negative experiences selling on Ebay too. That the card isn't as described, the buyer sends back the same (but physically different) card in worse shape & there's nothing to do. Or that people buy raw cards and want to return them, but we all know it's because they want to inspect them before sending off to grading. I've even heard of people complaining about the condition of PSA graded cards.

Yea most people, from what I've seen, do not allow returns when selling cards. That is a setting you check off on your seller page. I could see that being a royal PITA if you allowed returns
