It’s completely incorrect that the ncaa prevented kids from making money off their name. Every single person had the option to not VOLUNTARILY become an ncaa athlete and they can make all the money off their name they want
This is incorrect. They literally threatened a kicker at Ucf to shut down his YouTube channel or be ineligible.
The ncaa is as culpable as anyone in this. Schools too. Go to a college program 10 years ago and see how often the “student athlete” actually did the student part
These kids have been treated like pros for years, and because they didn’t want to make them employees they created a structure that cannot be governed.
Two fixes are to change the structure (quickly) or hope rich people stop throwing money at it

they received free tuition, books, housing, food, clothes, medical care, and a monetary stipend. They were getting very well compensated for being "amateur student athletes".
I’m sure if you were generating millions of dollars for your employer annually, you’d be just dandy when they paid you $35,000 a year.
You can argue a lot of things but suggesting that these high profile athletes were being justly compensated is not one of them.

Iamaleava was making $2.4 million on a contract that was reported to be $8 million when he signed it. But he started receiving payments when he was still in high school, and the total value of the contract would have been closer to $10 million over the life of the deal, sources told ESPN.
And he couldn't wait to renegotiate after 1 year on campus. This is the mess we've created full of wretches... The portal hoppers, the forever renegotiators and the complicit Universities, held hostage over what team gets confetti on their head and a hole in their wallet in the end.

It’s kind of ironic that the younger generation pisses on us older folks about how we thought the game was better back in the day, yet now cry and moan about all the changes.

All this is fixable if schools simply stop recruiting the idiots. No one made Tennessee recruit Nico. They freely gave a high school kid money. What legit businessman does this before they know what the player can produce. There’s a huge difference in giving a guy a 40K car vs. millions of cash before they even know if he’s any good. It’s gonna keep happening and I’m all for it. A fool and his money are easily parted.

No surprise at all. NiL and unlimited transfer has killed college sports
A bad combination but I think the unlimited transfer is worse

Too bad they didn't. Only way to fix it is to allow the players to blow it up.

The secret is that the portal has changed the sport more than the money. Money has been flowing for decades. NIL just created inflation in that system. Eventually the money will stabilize as ROI does not occur. Think about it - Bama is paying a lot more in NIL to not win titles than they paid out in under the table deals while winning titles. Same for UGA.
The portal is what most of you should attack because that’s where you lose your studs and depth which impacts wins way more than NIL. The problem is the court has ruled you can’t limit transfers and the overwhelming number of schools love the portal.
Most fans and media focus on the “star” player who transfers, like Jhamyr Gibbs going from GT to Bama. But, GT knows while we lost Gibbs we gained way more talent than we lost in total. That’s why our win total increased when we lost Gibbs. The mid level schools aren’t going to want to limit transfers which is exactly why the big schools are losing their minds about the portal.
You guys just have to accept the old days where an LSU tyoe school could sign three 5 stars and fourteen 4 stars and then have them sit on the 3 deep for 3 years are over. The talent is going to be spread around in the future which means parity.

The reality is these players have been overcompensated for decades. There is no market for these kids outside the umbrella of collegiate sports and the connections to the schools. None. Fans are watching Alabama play LSU and Michigan play Ohio State. They're not tuning in to see an 18 yr old Julio Jones and Patrick Peterson.
If there had been a market, someone would have exploited this hole in the market and started a professional league years ago for players of this age bracket. The fact no one ever did speaks volumes.

You're full of it. And your bias is showing dude. Gibbs was trying to win a championship and help his draft status. Which he certainly did. GaTech got better because you found a better head coach, Brent Key. A Saban disciple ironically.
Alabama would go on to win one national championship (2017) and two SEC championships (2016, 2018). During Key's tenure, Key was widely regarded as one of the top offensive line coaches in college football.
So GaTech found a pulse in college football but nothing close to getting to the Promise Land.
