Seems like a lot of excuses for Ovechkins shitty play half the season more than anything.

Well, considering his lack of goal scoring was in the first 10 games, which is not anywhere near half a season AND I was talking about the reasons for the Caps start... that statement is factually wrong on two counts.

And you're right, Ovie only plays well only against bad teams. Like the 4 points he's scored in 3 games against the Penguins.

Let's play Guess the Division based on Regulation Wins, excluding the division leader:

16-16-16-13 = 61

18-16-15-10 = 59

Which one is the Atlantic and which is the Southeast? How about by total losses (regulation + OT losses)?

19-20-21-24 = 84

21-21-22-26 = 90

So, taking away the Bettman point, the Atlantic is 61-84 and the Southeast 59-90. Ooooo. Huge difference.

By contrast, here's the Northeast, outside their division leader:

21-20-15-11 = 67
13-17-19-23 = 72

The Northeast is 67-72, without their best team and including Buffalo, who is 11-23 taking away OT wins. Yeah, the Atlantic's not very good either.

I guess the Caps' poor start falls on Ovie if you're either lazy or an idiot, and refuse to look at the data. Or, when someone shows you the data you still ignore it because it doesn't fit your narrative.

I think his jimmies are a little rustled because the Pens can't seem to stay healthy right now.

What excuses? We're in third. The only one making excuses is you. You're the only trying to argue something that has happened doesn't count because you don't like the results. You're the one trying to pretend that results don't matter.

Had the Caps continued to play crappy defense, they would have missed the playoffs and would have deserved to miss them. They've tightened up, and while no one will confuse them with the 1990s Devils, the improvement on defense has really aided the turnaround. You can't win if you're defense is a sieve. And I'd also point out that I'm the one who posted the FENCLOSE scores which show that the Caps rank near the bottom of the league. I didn't make an excuse. In fact, I pointed out that is a real team deficiency.

But I'm not as insecure as you are about my team. I don't have to try and denigrate every other team to make me feel good about my own. I don't talk about why the Ducks suck despite their great year. Hell, I don't even like the Penguins, but I brought up when they got screwed by the league when Neal took an elbow to the head. I even argued that Crosby might still deserve the MVP even if he misses 1/4 of the season.

Then again, I'm not as insecure about my team as you are. I don't need to constantly prove my fandom like you apparently need to. But yeah, I'd go straight to the "shitty fan" well to and not address any of my substance either. When you have the facts, pound the facts. When you don't have the facts, pound the table.

Keep pounding the table, man.

Wait what?

I'm the realist in here, takes more than beating a few bottom feeders to prove anything.

Caps fans bitch and bitch all season long from Ovechkin to Oates to especially the GM.

Get semi-hot vs scrub teams and here they come like they're the Pens or Hawks all of a sudden. Desperately wanting to be either of those teams or just very insecure.

Keep pounding that table while you can though.

I don't think any Caps fan is comparing them to the Hawks or Pens.

But who really knows how good the Pens are right now. Their team is a bunch of frail bodies.

Yeah, no one thinks the Caps are the best team in hockey. All the Cap fans in here are pretty much in "let's just get to the postseason and hope we get hot" mode. The Bruins and Pens (and Habs... what were the odds?) are the clear class of the East.

But I love how Hog is so insecure and scared that he throws out things like "semi-hot". The Caps are 8-1-1 in their last 10, which is pretty damn hot. They also have the second best record in the East since February 1, behind only the Penguins.

Hell, if I had spent all season like Hog telling everybody else that every team other than the Penguins (and the Hawks) is terrible, I'd be pretty nervous about the playoffs, too. He's written a lot of checks that he's hoping will clear. Like his pick that the Caps would lose three games to CAR, NJD, and NYR. Which he made twice, and the Caps won all three.

FB -- MTL has to be licking their chops tonight. Home game in a not-quite-must-win-but-close against a Caps team missing Ward, Erat, and Laich. Oh, and starting Neuvirth in nets to give Holtby some rest. Everything about this game screams that the Caps are punting it to focus on the rest of the schedule. Why kill yourself to get a win in Montreal? Just spend the game getting healthy and hope not to get blown out.

BTW - if the playoffs started right now, all of the Original Six teams would be playing each other in the first round.

Make it happen, NHL.

I heard the best compliment today about my Leafs from a Habs fan who watched the last 4 or 5 Leafs games, "The thing about the Leafs this year...they look like they belong...in the playoffs...in the top 10-12 teams..."

Ovie's goal was insanely good. Maybe even better than that Panthers goal. Holy crap. How did he do that?
