I read that the Avs are really struggling this year as a franchise. Fan support disappearing.
Sad to hear.
26th in the NHL in attendance and down 13% in tv ratings on Altitude, they are dead last in the NHL in that ratings decline from last year and 3rd from last in average household change at -16,000.
Used to be such a popular proud franchise.
On a good note, NHL tv ratings overall are up quite a bit, more than 100,000 per game on NBCS than previous high in 2010-11.

Getting rid of Bouwmeester is not a mistake it is acquiring him in the first place, which essentially cost the Flames Phaneuf and Regehr while gaining them precisely zero trips to the postseason.
Trade Kipper and just burn the whole thing to the ground. Then trade Glencross just to be nice to your one good player stuck in this crapfest.

What I wrote about Bouwmeester and the Flames in 2010. What an incompetent organization.

Let’s take a look at some history behind this deal to see how a bad front office behaves.
Two years ago, the Flames felt they were Stanley cup contenders with a rapidly closing window (I agreed with that), so they made a deadline deal for D Jordan Leopold, giving up a 2nd round pick and two spare players. Leopold proved to be a total bust in Calgary and was a restricted free agent. So the brain rust decided to trade his rights plus a 3rd round pick for Jay Bouwmeester.
Bouwmeester signed a contract paying him $7 million a year, despite the fact he sucks. Bouwmeester is an “offensive” defenseman who scored three goals last season. Yeah, three. Because of this huge outlay of cash, the Flames suddenly had most their cap invested in four players: Kiprusoff (a declining goalie), Iginla (an aged superstar), Phaneuf (a young star capable of greatness and stupidity), and Bouwmeester (total crap). Arguably the two next best players on the team were both defensemen (a youngish Giordiano whose contract was coming up and the ageless Robin Regehr).
Simply put, this put the Flames in a bit of a bind, as their payroll was tied up in their blueline and the next big payday was also a blueliner. The last thing the Flames needed was another star defenseman. They certainly didn’t need an overpriced one who sucks so completely that no light escapes from his play. The Flames looked at this situation and decided they had to dump a defenseman to pay for Gio next season. The Flames traded Dion Phaneuf, not Jay Bouwmeester.
It is at this point I will point out that Phaneuf scored more goals, had more assists, and had a higher plus/minus. Looking at advanced metrics, Phaneuf had a better CORSI rate, against tougher rated competition, with lower rated linemates. Looking at intangibles, Phaneuf was an excellent power play player, was a devastating hitter, though did have some erratic play due to, well, being young. He cost less money, was signed longterm, and is younger. He is also one of the most heavily marketed young NHL stars. Frankly, every single factor tilted in Phaneuf’s favor. The Flames decided to go all-in with Bouwmeester.
Phaneuf was traded for Ian White, Matt Stajan, and Niklas Hagman. Hagman and Stajan are both wingers and in a combined 80+ games have combined for 13 goals, which sucks. Hagman is on the decline of his career and Stajan is a player who has never scored 20 goals. These guys are roster fodder. The key to the deal had to be Ian White, who has now been traded for Anton Babchuck, a pretty good offensive defenseman. Certainly better than Bouwmeester.
So… in order to sign the downright worthless Jay Bouwmeester to a $7 mil/year contract, the Flames gave up a 2nd round pick, a 3rd round pick, DION PHANEUF and all they have to show for it is some roster fodder and a guy better and cheaper than Bouwmeester. And as Them points out, the team SUCKS defensively despite spending more on blueliners and goaltending than anyone.

It's a shame too really, if I had to pick a second favorite team it would be the Flames probably, over the Lightning.
Calgary is beautiful, went on a trip there for a week about 2 years ago now. Stayed downtown a few nights, went to a Flames game, and stayed at a lodge in the Rocky Mountains the last 2 days, hiked some trails, canoed, god, that was one helluva a time and just a beautiful place. Friendly and helpful people too, and some pretty nice women although they seemed pretty stuck up for the most part.
Alright, :csb: aside, it's Game Day.
I am PUMPED for the game tonight, it's on NBCSports for anyone wanting to watch.
So intrigued to see how we do without Sid in the lineup, but even more importantly, how the first line of Neal-Malkin-Iginla do with a game under their belt and a couple practices under their belt now that they're the main line while Sid is out.
Malkin has always stepped up majorly, and Neal, when Sid has been hurt. Letang is skating again and will be back possibly this weekend from his broken toe.
I think this Sidney injury is a blessing in disguise in a way. Neal, Malkin, Iginla, Morrow have to all step up now, the Captain is down and these guys will all rally together and push on, the veteran leadership, the former captains, the hunger for a Cup, this team is going to improve greatly on and off the ice together while Sid is down, and when he's back in time of the playoffs, yessir.

Given that the weird NHL short-season schedule has Anaheim at home playing the Stars the next two games, they will finish off what very little chance the Stars had of the playoffs. Maybe it will also hasten the Stars' eventual relocation to Seattle.

Jagr and Roy were both one season rentals anyway, so its not the worst thing to flip them for prospects. Honestly, it's a smart hockey move.
But trading Ott to get Roy was just a gut punch. This team lost its most popular player with the fanbase, and let's face it, they need every fan.

Not if you're trying to make the case that a market can't support a team long-term. In that case you pull a variant on the Major League routine - deliberately wreck the team, run off the fans, show the NHL that the only solution is relocation, and hello Jet City.

You know Jamie Benn has to be kicking himself signing a long-term deal. He could have taken a one-year deal and gotten himself to a playoff team. (Then again, he is from British Columbia, just north of the Space Needle. Maybe he knows something we don't ...)
