I didn’t think Belichick would win one Super Bowl in New England, much less 6.

I thought Payton/Brees was an odd combination. A short, immobile QB with a damaged throwing arm running a dynamic passing offense.

CP3 to the Suns. He couldn’t get NOLA, Houston and LAC there, and he gets the Suns there on the downside of his career?

Andy Reid to the Chiefs. NOBODY thought he’d win a Super Bowl. And he didn’t just win one—he stole it.

I honestly thought that Kiffin and Saban would not be good. Glad I was wrong.

I thought Brees to the Saints was a bad move because of his injuries in the past.

Woooooops!

Lane Kiffin to Bama. Kiffin was an absolute laughingstock, and this was right after the tarmac firing, and Kick Six and everyone thought Saban had lost his marbles
Kirby Smart to UGA
Joe Burrow to LSU, giving him a wide open offense after 2018

Disagree strongly here. Reid went to a million NFC championships and a Super Bowl at a fricked up Philly franchise before tons of off field and personal bullshite happened. I think a lot of people thought KC was a good fit and good hire.

I thought he was a good coach. But his ceiling and the Chiefs’ ceiling were both underachieving in the post-season. He should have had the Eagles in a minimum of 3 Super Bowls.

Was coming back here to post this. He had already burned out a couple of times in the NFL.

No one really knew how dynamic the offense would be with Payton. He also said Parcells used to tell the Cowboys staff that he thought Brees was a great QB to build a team around

Dabo Swinney hired as head coach while only having WR position coaching experience. I seriously think they were just trying not to spend a lot of money paying off Tommy Bowden and bringing in a big named coach.

Dabo has to be at the top of the list. No one expected much from him.

A bunch of these were respectable hires that turned out to be amazing: Saban to LSU, Belichick to New England, Pete Carroll at USC and Seattle, Andy Reid to KC. Mike Tomlin to Pittsburgh is one I would add to the list.

But part of that is because obvious, flawless hires (Calipari to UK, Bill Self to Kansas, Urban to Ohio State) are so rare.

Coach K to Duke is the ultimate meh hire that turned out to be amazing. Also Phil Jackson to the Bulls.

Burrow to LSU. Never imagined he had the potential to be a Heisman winner.

There wasn’t much that indicated that Joe Torre would go from a 15 year journeyman manager who never had a 90-win season to Casey Stengel 2.0 when the Yankees hired him

Brady looked like he was about to hang it up his lasts year in NE. I get his weapons were bottom 5 in the league but that never stopped Brady before. He looked like Alex Smith out there. Now he’s an MVP Candidate at 44.

ETA: I thought his signing in TB was a HR still. I just didn’t honk Brady would be too 3 still.

Urban Meyer was the hot young coach with an innovative offense who jumped from midmajor Utah to Florida (who won a bidding war with Notre Dame who was also after him) after the 2004 season and immediately started winning Natties. It hasn't happened since, but from Malzahn to Herman they've tried to recreate it a hundred times. Thread really illustrates that the vast majority of time, even when the new coach is a "sure thing", shite doesn't work out. You might as well cheap out and get the local Cajun or your goober good ol' boy receivers coach.

Mark Dantonio...figure he'd be OK but took them to a lot of good bowls and even a CFP (albeit got crushed but still pretty good)

Jim Leyland did wonders for the Tigers.

Not really a "Move" by your definition but one time I was totally wrong. We were at a friends house for a party and the 2005-2006 SEC Tournament (basketball) was on and LSU was playing without Tyrus Thomas due to injury. My buddy said yeah but we get TT back for the NCAA tourney and I replied something like "I don't think he's going to have that great of an impact really"

Came here to post this. No one saw that working like it did. Say what you will about Carroll, and he has some used car salesman in him, but he understood that the USC HC needs to have some showmanship and charisma. Connecting with those celebrities like Snoop was a HUGE recruiting tool for him.
