Truth on '99 sqaud. They were SICK and were beating teams 12-5 and 10-2 on a regular basis. The first 4 hitters batted .300 and 2-6 hit 20 or more homers. Next to '95, they're the all time best Indians club. That 2001 team was good, too.
If the '95 or '97 or '99 Indians had the 1954 pitching staff of three 20 game winners in Lemon, Wynn, Mike Garcia, as well as Feller and then the 5th starter Art Houtteman...as well as the bullpen of Narleski and Mossy...they may have gone 140-22 on the regular season.

All of those Indians lineups were killer.
But they, much like the Rangers of the 90's, couldn't get it done on the hill.
Cleveland's offense was at least potent enough to get them to the Series a couple of times.
I don't know why the mention of the 97' team though. The Indians had a better squad in 96' and 98'...and of course 95'. The team got hot in the postseason in 97', and somehow got by Baltimore.
The Tony Fernandez extra inning bomb was clutch against the O's. Baltimore had 10 hits but couldn't push a run across, and I believe the Fernandez homer was the Tribe's 3rd hit of the game maybe?
The 2001 M's intrigued me because it was after they unloaded the high price talent. That team kept winning, and even had solid showings the next couple years despite missing the postseason. It's a wonder they never even made it to the Fall Classic.

The meltdown in 1999 hurts a little too, I guess it made 2007 that much worse as well. frick the Sawx.

Because, I don't believe the Indians did have a better lineup in 96 or 98 or 99. Everybody feels the 97 Indians didn't belong. Did they underachieve? Yes. But the talent was all there. I don't believe Baltimore's lineup was any better.

So you are trying to tell me that the talent alone makes a great lineup and not the production?

Winnfield, off the top and not looking at stats, may have had, in 144 games, about 150 AB's? Murray was mostly the dh and when he wasn't, it was likely Sorrento who sat the bench on that night. Later in the season, guys like Herbert Perry and Alvaro Espinoza played more than Winnfield. I'll never forget his Memorial Day blast off ChiSox that season.
for sure..i just typed out that lineup off memory..somehow i forgot tom sention alomar jr, and i kinda included murray and winfield in there on purpose...just out of respect for how awesome they were in the best years..
just checked the 2005 stats...pena had 263ab's while alomar jr had 203..alomar was a much better hitter, though...

Expos/Yanks was going to be an epic Series.

Mattingly would have gotten his ring and secured his place in the hall of fame

Yanks would have totes put Jeter on the playoff roster and he would have 6 rings already, IMO.
