League 1 is cooler too.

No, he's not. Increasing the amount of college scholarships could only help. If nothing else, it would keep more players in the game longer. Give the poorer demographics a goal that they are familiar with when most are unfamiliar with the idea of professional academies. They stay in the game longer, increasing the odds of getting spotted if they have any talent.
The ultimate goal wouldn't be to actually get them to college, although it would be a nice byproduct. It would be a way to increase familiarity, popularity, exposure, and a way to keep people in the game longer.
College soccer isn’t the same thing as what guys the same age do around the world
You are trying to play both side of the fence saying increase scholarships to a flawed system but then don’t send them there. It doesn’t work that way.

At least they play on real grass
Which is another issue with MLS, soccer at that level isn’t meant to be played on turf.

I don't think anyone is arguing that.

It absolutely can work that way.

If quality players are not taking those scholarships then they will eventually go away and we are back to square one
We don’t want quality players in the college game
So no it won’t work

I think it's in the 13-18 range. I don't think that's overstating it.

I enjoy MLS
I just don’t have these delusions about the league like some of y’all do.
At the end of the day if we can get it to the standard or Brazil or Argentina where we develop really good players domestically and then get them in bigger leagues that will be a win.
But the talk of over taking the euro leagues and being bigger than MLB is laughable

How's the MSB feel about this? Can soccer overtake baseball in the near future?
In 2019, in our little rec sports program, soccer moved past basketball for the second most number of players, still a good ways behind baseball/softball.
Soccer has been popular enough at the younger levels, that by now, we should be seeing an increase in the talent level in the high school and college / U-22 programs, are we seeing that though?
These kids, when forced to pick one sport, are still choosing a sport other than soccer. Until that changes, soccer will continue to be second-tier in the US.

It’s not even the same game
It is 100% not the answer
The difference in players at the age of 19 from college to a professional academy is insane.
Jack Harrison is the player who most recently showed how bad college soccer is.
College soccer tactics are more based on fitness than anything else bc you can sub guys off and back on so they just run themselves into the ground until they need a break.

Pay to play works for every other American sport because of college. The lack of college is the only reason why pay for play doesn’t work.
Kids training for college scholarship offers will get noticed by big academies and end up advancing to where they need to be even without actually going to college.

Pay to play isn’t the answer for soccer
You really have no idea what you are talking about
The appeal of college soccer isn’t the answer
College soccer is counter productive to the development of players. How can you not understand this.

That doesn't stop schools from giving scholarships to bad players in other sports. Worst case scenario, you end up with more players that are the caliber of current college players.

Yea that’s not the answer bc college soccer is flooded with non Americans

I agree they won’t overtake Europe or MLB
But that’s not the same as saying the league is a pyramid scheme that is bad for US player development. That’s also laughable
I think MLS teams make money. Maybe the bad ones only do because of league payouts, but that’s not a whole lot different than the hundreds of clubs in Europe that operate in the red with absolutely no financial sense whatsoever.
Hundreds of European clubs pay totally unsustainable wage bills on the hope that maybe they get promoted/make a continental tournament. Big clubs do it, little clubs do it, and it’s stupid as shite.
Regardless, MLS is a fine league, especially considering it’s only existed for 24 years and basically had to pull themselves out of the grave from 2005 onward or so. Lots of room to improve but it’s entertaining and sustainable. Biggest thing to do now is get rid of bad owners like Kraft and increase investment, but easier said than done.

The WNBA is considered a joke by most people and their ratings are 40% higher than average ratings for MLS matches. These owners are delusional.
That has more to do with the NBA propping up the WNBA and giving it prime time weekday spots than it is real fan viewership. When's the last time you've ever seen a regular season MLS game on a primetime spot? Maybe one of Zlatan's first few games with the Galaxy.
