Apparently the price is very high. Jeff Luhnow mentioned in his press conference today that there weren't very many solid third baseman on the market and the ones who were would take a "kings ransom."

Joe could throw him into the clusterfrick that is the 3B/DH/rest rotation.

ETA: Long-term it'd make some sense. This season though, Idk. Ibanez and Chavez are doing well enough. Going forward I could see headley at 3rd and bitch tits at DH. I don't like it because he can still play a solid 3rd but if Joe is gonna keep doing the "rest" thing then I'm all for it. As finicky as he is, maybe the stability of being everyday DH would do him some good.

Chavez/Ibanez I keep waiting for that DL stint. Playing sparingly was one thing but every day is a grind and can they hold up.
Having Jones/Nix/Ichiro can keep them from playing everyday but still playing more than they are use to, also fatigue down home stretch may present an issue. Tex is hot right now, Jeter has faded after hot start, Cano/Granderson/Swisher are doing exactly how we thought.

If you get a C prospect from someone, get rid of him. Dude is a bum.

High price tag and Kevin correia don't belong in the same sentence

Exactly. Lotta guys playing decent enough to warrant PT. Can we really afford Headley? If he's still a Padre at the end of the season I fully expect Cash to pursue him...not sure he fits or warrants a mid season move now though.

Can we? Ye they are the Yankees and could make it work by giving Headley 3B job and letting Chavez go back to that utility role. When ARod gets back it will complicate things but then Headley will slide into a 3B/1B/DH role I assume. Isn't Headley signed through next year?

Yes/No. I THINK he'll be FA eligible in 2015 so that would give NY 3 full seasons.

Then you're looking at this:

3B: Headley
DH: Tits
UTL: Chavez

OF: Grandy
OF: Ichiro
OF: Swish
OF: Jones
OF: Ibanez

If you play it by this year then here is the DH situation:

A Jones: 102OPS+ 12HR 27RBI
Tits: 113OPS+ 15HR 44RBI
Ibanez: 97OPS+ 13HR 44RBI
Chavez: 104OPS+ 8HR 20RBI

Headley isn't a power hitter so who do you drop?

He has above average power but it gets masked by playing in those expansive NL West stadiums

Look at his home/road splits, he has above average power an in Yanks line up if h could hit for what he does on road now and play quality defense it is upgrade.
He shows .272 avg, .484 slugg, and .372 OBP

Ichiro offers nothing but better defense over Jones/Ibanez
Rotating them with Swisher wouldn't hurt either as only Grandy as a must start. So I think it would work well, AROd is out 6 weeks and then will need time ad well, no telling who may get injured between now and then.

True, but we aren't talking about a 5+ HR differential. Is he good enough to replace Tits or Chavez in the lineup? Chavez pops one every 23 PA. Headley hits one every 36. It may not appear to be a massive difference, but the Yanks rely HEAVILY on homers. If Headley was a bag swiper then it would even out, but he isn't.

Well in all fairness, that's a fricking huge upgrade. Does his D outweigh Ibanez/Jones bat though? That's the question in a lineup that relies on the homer.

Then you're almost leaning on injuries and there is no guarantee that'll happen. I just don't like inserting Headley into a lineup that thrives on power.

Even IF you platoon Headley/Tits, you're changing the lineup come playoff time. That's dangerous.

Tits is basically Headley at this point, he is not the ARod of 3 seasons ago. He is a .270 hitter with 20 home run potential who plays below avg defense. Headly offers above avg defense at the position and in a different park would be that 29 home run guy.

Not really "counting" on injuries just looking at past to predict future. Especially Chavez here, Jones will be fine, Ibanez I don't know about, and well Swisher Has been about league avg over past 2 season but he does get on base at about a .375 clip.

I'm surprised Chavez has stayed healthy. They're all FA after this year so it won't be a big problem though.

IDK if I would say he's below average with the glove. He's looked better this year compared to last season. I think the hip is finally good. I totally believe he could be a .290-.300AVG 30HR player if Joe let him get in a groove.

Headley is good, no doubt. I would just rather replace A-Rod with some pop. No doubt his numbers would improve but you're talking about more than doubling his best HR seasons.
