Bleacher Report

quote:

Through the grapevine has come a hint that the designated hitter may become a universal reality in Major League Baseball in the not-too-distant future.

Hurry up. Oh, for the love of David Ortiz, Edgar Martinez and Frank Thomas, please hurry up.

Per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic and Jeff Passan of ESPN, the MLB Players Association has been pushing for the DH—which has been saving American League pitchers from hitting for themselves since 1973—to come to the National League for the 2019 season.

With pitchers and catchers due to report for spring training next week, it's probably a bit late to adapt such a seismic change for the coming season. The same goes for some of the other big ideas (e.g., a 20-second pitch clock and a three-batter minimum for pitchers) being kicked around by the MLB and the MLBPA.

As it mentions above it will probably be too late to pass this for 2019, but it looks like a universal DH is coming in 2020.

I’m glad this decision will be applauded by everyone and there will be no arguing about the move whatsoever

Universal DH or no DH. Either way, just make them the same.

Good. It was never going away in the AL, and having the same rules for both leagues is the only logical conclusion.

Will this usher in automatic suspensions of pitchers hitting a batter more than once in a game?

They should go the opposite way and eliminate the DH.

26 here and I hate it. I loved the distinction in style of play between the two leagues.

I'm a big fan of the proposed 3 batter minimum for relievers though

If you are on the field, you should bat. Guess I'm old school. (and I'm not that old)

Watching pitchers flail at the plate is brutal. I don’t understand how people enjoy watching it.

Each league needs to do one or the other. I'm for the DH personally.

I used to be anti-DH, but it has grown on me.

I'd rather watch a DH hit than 99% of pitchers.

It also makes sense that the MLBPA would be pushing for it, essentially adding 15 more starting players to the league.

A. I think its hilarious

B. In a perfect world, I would hope it would add more value to pitchers that aren't complete non-athletes that can just throw the ball well.

It needs to happen.
Pitchers have no business batting, easy way to get injured.

Well not mad, I get it, but I enjoy not having the DH

I enjoy the strategy and gamble that goes into having the pitcher bat.

And a pitcher who drills someone should have to get a taste of their own medicine.
