You should, it's been heavily reported for months by everyone including Cubs writers. Just not quite that bad.

Bryce Harper to the Cubs? Hah.

In late November, the Cubs’ budgetary restrictions caused them to lose free-agent reliever Jesse Chavez to the Rangers on a two-year, $8 million contract. Little has changed since then, and the Cubs would need to clear money to sign even a modestly priced reliever such as free-agent righty Adam Warren, according to major-league sources.

Club officials are concerned about the bullpen, and continue to talk to other free agents of interest, sources say. But with a projected luxury-tax payroll of $228.4 million, according to RosterResource.com, the team remains in a financial box.

At least one trade seems necessary, but which player would the Cubs move? Infielder/outfielder Ben Zobrist, set to earn $12 million in the final year of his contract, would seem a logical candidate. But Zobrist turns 38 on May 26, and the market is flooded at second base, his primary infield position. In addition, Zobrist’s contract allows him to block trades to eight teams.

You basically just posted a longer version of three posts ago so not sure what this proves compared to that.

I have a hard time believing they used every last dime on November 2 to sign Cole Hamels for next year. If you think stuff doesn’t get strategically fed to the media this time year by agents and front office personnel I don’t know what to tell you

At this point, I’d trade a good prospect just to get rid of Tyler chatwood.

By far one of the worst contracts I’ve ever seen.

That's the article from The Athletic, I subscribe so I just posted the whole thing.

CBS article rips them a bit too

quote:

It's hard for me to wrap my head around the decision-making this offseason if this is truly the case. Why would the Cubs pick up Cole Hamels' $20 million option (with the Rangers taking Drew Smyly and $7 million as part of the deal) if they essentially now have no money left? Why not non-tender Addison Russell given his domestic violence baggage instead of picking up what looks like something around $4.3 million in arbitration? Those two decisions just don't seem like they were made by a team that is desperate to save money, but apparently the Cubs really wanted to retain both Hamels and Russell that badly. It's a head-scratcher.

What remains, per all reporting this offseason, is a team that can't really spend much more at all due to budget constraints given by ownership.

Because he was dominant from the second he put on a cubs uniform for a rotation that sorely needed it.

They'll inevitably trade someone to get a couple bullpen guys.

MLBN is talking about it right now. They're floating Bud Norris and Cody Allen if and when the Cubs free up some money.

Burnes and Peralta are both pretty nasty. I don’t see how SF could expect a better headliner

I would much prefer Burnes but Peralta looked good when I saw him. Just not sure if he stays a starter

im not the biggest fan of burnes but i feel like most of that is just his profile and my own personal opinion on pitchers. i like dominant strikeout pitchers over pitchers like burnes. id take peralta over those three and work on getting his walk rates down. but id want more if i was trading bumgarner. i could just be overestimating his value

Chavez is 35 and had a 5.05 ERA in 205 IP the two seasons prior to last year. And a 3.51 before even getting to Chicago last year

Love how he’s become the poster boy for budgetary concerns. Like that’s the exact kinda guy you put a certain price on and not go a dollar over. Not Getting in a bidding war over Jesse Chavez is exactly what smart teams do regardless of money

Bumgarner is still coming off two injury plagued years and is a rental. He would be a great pickup for Milwaukee but I don’t think SF is going to get what Arizona got for Goldschmidt

I don't think there is any way in hell they could get a worse return than Goldschmidt.

Per Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle, on Twitter, “nothing substantive is being discussed at the moment” regarding Bumgarner.
