Doesn't he have like the largest GM contract

He technically doesn’t have a contract now. I’m sure Boston wouldn’t hesitate to make him the highest paid executive in baseball if that’s what it took

Surely they won’t be so stupid to let him go

I think he wants to leave. I'm sure ownership, these last three endings, and just the fanbase in general has probably led to him wanting a clean break and something new

I'm freaking out

Why? They'd probably promote Byrnes and be just fine. Even if it weren't him, they have an excellent roster, farm system, and player development team in place to continue to do what they're doing. It's not like Friedman brought a championship to LA.

I dunno I think it would be pretty unfulfilling to leave having not won a title there with the group they’ve had. And it’s not like anyone is blaming him, at least not from the outside. I would be kind of surprised if he leaves.

If he did go to Boston though it would be really interesting to see how he starts shaking that roster up

It would sustain on it’s own for a while but I would definitely be concerned they would fall back behind the curve if he left. He put that entire framework in place.

I would think that there would be big questions in the clubhouse if somehow out of the game 5 debacle that it’s Friedman who is gone and Roberts who is back.

Friedman is the structure. Hes the player development. I have no idea how byrnes, who would be the replacement, would continue. It's a risk. I think his time in Arizona looks fine in hindsight, I dont remember much of his time in san Diego.

Friedman has built this monster thats poised to compete for the next 15 WS, I dont know if Byrnes will do the same

It could but it would take a massive turn of events to undo that well oiled system they already have in place. They would have to hire a bunch of Dave Dombrowski's to screw that up. With that said, they'd probably have a ring to show for it too.

I think your concern is way overblown. He's not the only good and competent GM out there. Tampa's running just fine without Friedman. Boston won a WS without Epstein. The talent rich and deep pocketed Dodgers will be just fine.

and i think thats a poor way of looking at it. you dont just shrug your shoulders and go "whatever, we will be ok" if someone like friedman leaves the organization. you do everything you can to keep him inside of it cause you are absolutely better with him than you are without him. thats the point

But they would be just fine without him. Do you suddenly think they're just going to stop being a 90+ win team anywhere in the near future if Friedman left?

We'll agree to disagree. He did such a great job building it back up that even if he weren't there, they'd operate just the same. That's just my opinion.

If Byrnes isn't the next man up, all I would do is call Erik Neander's agent up and hand him a blank check. He'd be on the first flight to LA the next morning out.

You joke about dombrowski but if Friedman leaves you almost certainly will hire someone who will be more apt to trade the farm for major league talent to win a championship knowing they don’t have the cache of Friedman and if they win a championship they will get instant accolades for that.

Friedman has had an astounding amount of discipline to trust the farm and get the payroll under control.

Also while Friedman has help with the analytics department he ultimately is the one pulling the trigger in the draft. Given what position y’all have been drafting in and the depth of talent is incredible.

the player development under friedman has been nothing short of heroic. here is a list of players who are currently on the major league roster who are 25 or younger

bellinger
seager
buehler
urias
may
smith
verdugo
lux

so yea. all of those but urias and seager were friedman picks and we still have a top 7 or so minor league system even after all of this talent graduation. i also didnt even mention people like gonsolin

if friedman leaves, will the organization take an immediate step back? probably not. but the point is with friedman, the organization is so healthy that we have multiple young and talented internal options ready to go for the major league team and its just a conveyor belt year after year after year of options. we dont have to use our immense financial resources to fill holes because of what hes built. that keeps us from being in a spot like the giants or the red sox right now

we can all agree that it will take a while for us to get to that point, but its a possibility that it could happen under someone different when its very unlikely to happen at all under friedman

I'm not saying he wouldn't be missed as he's a great GM. He's also not the only person capable of doing that job. The Dodgers aren't going to collapse w/o him.

My opinion that the Dodgers will be just fine if he left is a testament to how great of a job and system he was able to put in place there. I have no doubt that machine will keep on plugging.

You ever thought maybe that is what has been holding the Dodgers back from winning that ring?

Meh, he has tried to make the big move with Yu, Machado, etc.... So he has been willing to trade but it hasn't worked.
Dodgers need some bullpen help and maybe a starter as well. Kershaw pitched well this year but he is no longer the ace. Buehler is taking the stage.
Buehler, May, Kershaw then who is in the rotation? Stripling? Maeda? Urias? Hill/Ryu are free agents

today rosenthal said that, belief among the league which...take that for what its worth, is that its unlikely that friedman would take the red sox job. so i might start to calm down here
