Yes, a NFL head coach needs to know strategy, but more important is being a good leader, putting whatever talent you have in the best positions to succeed, and getting by-in from your guys. He is probably better at all of that combined than anyone from this generation.

Also helps they generally make good personnel decisions, I can't remember a recent player they let go of too early or overpaid and kept them on the team too long.

I like him a lot, but how many coaches get handed the keys to a playoff team and a HoF QB in their first year?

Most coaches are hired because the team sucks and the coach was fired. In his case the coach retired.

He's a good coach, just saying I wonder what his record would be if took over in Cleveland or Detroit 10 years ago

My point is- if you would have handed the keys to a career .500 random NFL coach instead of Tomlin, how much different would their record be today?

The foundation was already there

He should still have AB, Juju, Bell, and an elite front seven. And the next QB might make fewer bog plays, but will also throw fewer interceptions. Steelers will be fine as long as they upgrade the secondary.

And he was close to being fired in that 2012, 13, 14 stretch.

Saban would not have done as well as Tomlin... Chip Kelly would have not done as good As Tomlin.... Jouhn Fox would not have done this well.. Even Pete Carroll would have not done as well...

They went 8-8 in 2012 and 2013 then in 2014 they were 3-3. There was a ton of buzz about it in 2014, old man.

He's a good coach, but the Steelers always have talent. Not New England talent, but talent.

This
He was flat out gifted a solid team in a very weak division.
