I bet there are bears in Mississippi.

Certainly more bears there than Tigers in Louisiana (or in Alabama or South Carolina).

Our nickname is from history:

quote:

The Louisiana Tigers was the common nickname for certain infantry troops from the state of Louisiana in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War.

Originally applied to a specific company, the nickname expanded to a battalion, then to a brigade, and eventually to all Louisiana troops within the Army of Northern Virginia.

Although the exact composition of the Louisiana Tigers changed as the war progressed, they developed a reputation as fearless, hard-fighting shock troops.

Although no one gets it entirely right. The Tiger symbol was used by Louisiana troops before the Civil War, namely the Washington Artillery.

It's obvious to me that Louisiana troops became known as "Tigers" because those soldiers in the Washington Artillery were already wearing Tiger badges. That nickname didn't just come out of the blue, as many would have it.

Just a thought here, but how about you fix your football program and have that represent your school to younger generations? Again, just a thought.

Duly noted...I guess when your football team is mediocre, you aren't allowed to do ANYTHING else to possibly improve the gameday experience.

"I'm struck by the fact that when opposing teams come to our stadium, and they bring a mascot, all of our young fans are lined up to see if they can get a picture taken with it, whether it's the Penn State Nittany Lion or Sparty. That's a little annoying to me.

I actually admire that quote, because so many other ADs would act like they are above it.

Well done. Perhaps if they brought in a live wolverine and had it gnaw the brain out of the opposing mascot, I would be all for it.

LOL. That was never an official wolverine mascot. If you notice that picture was taken at Spartan Stadium. MSU's band and cheer squad will often have a fake mascot of the visiting team and beat it up.

The Michigan Brigade, sometimes called the Wolverines, the Michigan Cavalry Brigade or Custer's Brigade, was a brigade of cavalry in the volunteer Union Army during the latter half of the American Civil War. Composed primarily of the 1st Michigan Cavalry, 5th Michigan Cavalry, 6th Michigan Cavalry and 7th Michigan Cavalry, the Michigan Brigade fought in every major campaign of the Army of the Potomac from the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863 to the Confederate surrender at Appomattox Court House in April 1865.

The brigade first gained fame during the Gettysburg Campaign under the command of youthful Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer. After the war, several men associated with the brigade joined the U.S. 7th Cavalry Regiment and later fought again under Custer in the Old West frontier.

quote:

At the subsequent Battle of Gettysburg, the Michigan Brigade was posted east of Gettysburg along the Hanover Road on July 3. On the third day, the brigade fought in piecemeal fashion, with the 5th and 6th serving as dismounted skirmishers near the John Rummel farm on the left of the battlefield, while first the 7th and then the 1st Michigan charged into a growing mounted melee in the center. Custer's cry of "Come on, you Wolverines!" became the rallying cry of the brigade

Here is a clip from the Bryant Gumbel show Real Sports about mascot camp. You do see Willy the Wolverine, at the 30, 38 and 1:18 mark, but it's a joke put on by the other big ten schools at the camp. You see Sparty and Goldy at the camp.

I find it interesting that there is no large population of wolverines in the state of Michigan

If I remember correctly, the HBO special on the Ohio State - Michigan rivalry commented that they labeled themselves Wolverines, after people below Toledo called them "wolverines" as a derogatory term, and they just embraced it. So essentially Ohio State fans gave them their nickname, and the UM band gave Ohio State the first "Ohio." Funny how things come together like that.

Nor was there ever such.

I love this response (a similar one was made frequently in regard to Ole Miss and the bear)... was there ever a large tiger population in Louisiana ? Or a large elephant population in Alabama?

eta: several beat me to it.

Ask Marvel Comics if you can use "Wolverine" as their new mascot.

Why? For saying that they should either get a dude in a suit running around on the sidelines or have a Mustelide running around biting people?

Just get something that looks like the Wisconsin mascot and don't dress him up like a member of a barbershop quartet.
