nah, ive played on several teams where pitchers practiced it and were really good at pitching and moving back. They fielded the ball really well too

I personally try to pull the ball or go opposite field. But, sometimes you can't help it. If the other team intentionally hits up middle and you can tell.. then its fair play.

You're softball players. By definition you're not hard asses.

If you can control where you hit the ball why would you hit it at someone standing 45 feet from you?

Because if you identify a weakness in the defense, you exploit it.

It's a bitch move. If it's intentional, then middle's open. If not, you apologize to the pitcher and let him know it wasn't intentional and move on.

I knew where to not pitch it
i have an inside out swing and middle to rc is where my natural swing dictates i hit the ball. you would be fricked if you threw me an inside pitch and weren't still on your toes. i've hit more pitchers than i care to recall, and none have them have been on purpose. once i played a little and learned what i was doing, i would try to place it a little more. accidents still happen, though.

i've only intentionally hit it back up the box a few times in my career. 99% of the time, it was retaliation.

Yea Pelican has a rule but it's only enforced during league games. Any tournament esp. sanctioned tourneys there is no rule...basically you better apologize if you go back up the box or your pitcher will be next in line

Also depends on what leagues you are in now a days. I've been playing tournament ball for about 11 years now and if i'm pitching a fun league or industrial league people that go up the middle sometime have no idea how to control it. On our league night or during the weekends we're playing teams that shave and roll their bats every weekend and it gets dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. I won't pitch on the weekends due to the fact that all these young teams are using shaved bats etc. Our rule basically is don't hit our pitcher we won't hit theirs and if you hit at our guy don't be a douche just apologize and everything's cool..but alcohol and test. get out of hand with these younger teams.

I personally like the rule for rec. leagues and such it's just under hand pitch softball not the world series everyone should be out there to have fun and drink a few w/their boys

I don't see how that is more dangerous than being a runner on 1st or 3rd with an old man reaction time to a screaming line drive at your head without a glove or helmet.

First, if you ever shoot one up the middle, you should at least say something to the pitcher indicating you didn't mean to. If it's coed and you are hitting oppo, its a little more understanding. But chances are, unless you are playing competitive coed you don't generate the same power as you do strong hand. And if you do, you shouldn't be playing rec coed.

Anyway, If the other team does it and are just being assholes about it, we just started sending them up middle.

And for those guys in this thread saying to field your position and back up, I guarantee you haven't pitched in slow pitch against a decent team.

Precisely. I've never heard of this, but I don't understand playing softball as anything other than a vehicle for hanging out with friends and drinking. If you take softball this seriously, you need to find a baseball league.

I was 4. The pitcher was 10. it was NYC area, with the small pink rubber ball and broom handle bat, which is the traditional pick up game ball and bat of the region. I just missed killing the pitcher. Wowser. the ball nearly gave him a hair cut.

I also remember nearly being turned castrato by a line drive up the middle - pitching to my 8 yr old daughter and her girlfriend at the park.

Therefore, since a 4 yr old and an 8 yr old could nearly kill someone, I think any grown men who cant agree before the game on no hitting up the middle or its an out, are just idiots. Its going to happen if you dont make it a point not to do it.

I have only played a little bit of softball, but I've never liked it because I've played so much baseball. I had no idea this was an issue, and it just makes me dislike softball more. With baseball, I was always trying to hit the ball up the middle if the pitch wasn't too far inside or outside. Now, if I want to play softball, I'm supposed to try to not hit it up the middle? No thanks.

that is the exact reason my softball swing has me peeling the middle if i don't go out of my way to place it

Base team level, USSSA and shaved bats galore. You can move.
