Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but I thought baseball did away with counting stat contract incentives due to this reason right here?

I wonder why the Red Sox had such a hard-on about preventing Minor from reaching 200 strikeouts. It’s not like the Rangers are rivals with the Red Sox and as far as I know there hasn’t been any particular animosity between Minor and the Red Sox in the past.
