we don't do that with any other former lsu coach
Because all of the other former LSU coaches are “former” because they couldn’t win at a high level anymore. Will Wade was winning basketball games at LSU at a consistent level that hasn’t been reached since the early 90s. Many ignorant LSU fans ignored his success by claiming his teams only played street ball or that he only won by talent alone. Wade is let go and the guy that follows him has not put a winning product on the floor yet, and in the mean time Will Wade is setting program records at a school two hours down the road with zero basketball history.
So yeah, people that wanted LSU to fight for Wade are a little perturbed. .

This is just a raise for his current contract. He will never finish this out and I still expect him to be gone after next year.

How, who would want them?

WIn-Win for McNeese and Wade. better pay for Wade and a better payday for McNeese when Wade leaves for a better job
Exactly. Wade and the AD were friends before Wade was hired at McNeese. In fact, Wade was initially going to hire Schroyer as an assistant on Wade's first (maybe second) LSU staff. That's why Wade got the opportunity and chose to take the opportunity to coach at McNeese. Both Wade and Schroyer knew before game 1 that, ideally, the job would be a "rehab stint" for Wade with the hope to move back up to a power conf job as soon as possible. But I don't know if even Wade thought he would be as successful at MSU this quickly.
Schroyer knows Wade will be leaving McNeese if/when the right power conf. job comes around. Maybe as early as this offseason. This is just a way to get McNeese some more revenue when that inevitably happens.

I’m with you. I don’t think he leaves after year one, but, if year two follows a similar pattern as year one (regardless of what happens in the post season) Will Wade will be a hot name and get another shot at a program with more resources than McNeese and he may be ready to make the jump.

This.
Wade is the only former coach (at least in recent years) I can remember where much of the fanbase (and even booster/donors) didn't want him to leave. Bertman retired. Saban left on his own accord. By the end of their tenures the fans wanted Miles, Orgeron, Brady, Johnson, Jones, Laval, Maineiri, even Brown, gone. THAT is why you see the different response towards him.

McNeese and SELA baseball and McNeese softball would be an attractive add for someone like the Sun Belt. They might be semi-competitive in basketball and the other minor sports would be lagniappe.

He would be better off as a plant operator or riverboat captain.

Yeah I don’t think anyone thinks that he’s going to finish out this contract. It just gives him a bump for the time he has here so he doesn’t feel like he has to jump at a mid major offer this offseason.
I think with another year he will have P5 opportunities and this buyout will give McNeese a little cash to help find the next coach. I think the university admin has seen what is possible with a successful basketball program and especially with football being down it’s an opportunity to bring in revenue.

It’s a smart move to get ahead of it, but there is nothing they can do to keep him. Does his new contract still have recruiting restrictions?

I do wonder how tainted Will Wade is nationally. What Will Wade is alleged to have done is really not that big of a knock on a college basketball coach. He didn’t run a program full of kids that stayed in trouble with the law. He didn’t ever get caught up in a cover up scandal dealing with his players being involved in sexual assault, or any other legal issues. The worst you could say is the rumor that Will Wade wasn’t truthful with his AD when confronted with the allegations of paying players. I could see that being an issue for a future employer, but is that too much to overcome?
College basketball has a history of coaches getting slapped by the NCAA, losing their job, then resurfacing elsewhere and continue their winning ways. Ever heard of Rick Pitino, Kelvin Sampson, Bruce Pearl?
We now live in the world of NIL. Will Wade being accused of paying players in the past should not be a deal breaker for his future in college basketball.

If he were to remain at McNeese until the end of next season it would boost his salary from a meager $400k up to a cumulative $1.4MM. A full million more than he signed on for this past offseason.
I'd imagine that Wade and Schroyer have sat down and discussed this and could have possibly agreed on him staying another season. This would set up both parties for the best case scenario with the $1MM buyout in place at that time and hopefully a program set up to sustain success after his departure.

Not worth the digital paper it's written on. He gone.

Add to this, that I was very interested in watching Kansas football when Miles was their head coach, especially when he had Pooka Williams from Hahnville making plays. Sadly, that all came crumbling down with revelations that Miles was perving on the coeds at LSU so much that it cost him his job at Kansas.

Bill Self seems to be still respected by the national talking heads, and whet he did was just as bad if not worse than Wade. The national media just doesn’t like Wade because he tells it is. He’s not afraid to speak on things and he’s got a little arrogance to him.

The only thing Will Wade did wrong was that he did the dirty work himself because he apparently didn’t have a bagman he trusted to handle it for him.
