Playoff wins then. Busted!

It's comparing apples and oranges under totally different systems.

Getting to play 2024 Indiana in a playoff game is not the same as 2018 Clemson or 2020 Bama, two of what are considered the best teams of all time.

I am coming more to the dark side, though, as it looks more and more like Kelly is great a getting programs to the consistently good but not able to get them over the hump.

And I do like Freeman and he's done a great job at maintaining what Kelly built at Notre Dame.

Wonder why you left out the Sugar Bowl against UGA. Hmm...
And this is rich considering how y'all pump up BK's Citrus Bowl wins on the Rant.

Who cares about bowl wins?

It's national championship or bust.

So you consider Curly Hallman to be a coaching equal to Brian Kelly? Wow.

OK, a playoff win vs a UGA team without its starting QB.

I don't pump up any bowl wins. They are glorified scrimmages.

So you understand that as an LSU fan I have to defend Kelly over Freeman (at Notre Dame) until Kelly is no longer my coach, lol.

And UGA has been better with Stockton vs Beck, so...

I still think a guy like Kelly or Franklin, who had built programs from the ground up, was needed by LSU to clean up O's mess with the hope that it could be different at LSU.

Well should've thought about that before this thread.

I still want to know - are Curley Hallman and Brian Kelly coaching equals?

Sure, I think in LSU’s position at the time hiring Kelly was the right call, but the large contingency that started clearing off mantle space for national titles and refusing to hear criticism of him were dead wrong.

At LSU, in terms of national championships?

Yes, they are equals.

Has Kelly at LSU won more games and reached a higher level than Hallman at LSU?

Kelly is better than Hallman because he reached SEC Championship game and has won more games.

My whole issue with Kelly/Freeman situation at Notre Dame is that it was being sold as Freeman bringing Notre Dame to levels never before seen under Kelly, when they both achieved the same level of success in their 3rd season: a loss in a national championship game.

They were/are both good for Notre Dame. Kelly was the right guy when he was hired and brought Notre Dame back to prominence and stability. Kelly got boring and tiresome never getting over the hump and now Freeman seems better suited for this new era of college football at Notre Dame.

Notre Dame in the NIL era is not fair to compare to Notre Dame in the pre-NIL era.

As an ND fan, I do think that’s a fair statement. We have an advantage now that we didn’t have ten years ago. But that also makes me question the structure pre-NIL, because a lot of these programs, especially Southern programs, kinda struggling post-NIL are in actuality resource-poor programs who were willing to cheat their asses off and don’t know what to do now that everyone, including truly wealthy schools, can pay players.

But John Casey also conveniently leaves out Kelly’s first SEVEN years at ND when we had a lot of middling to bad teams. Freeman has never and will never have anything as bad as 2010 (which was a loaded team talent-wise - the one thing Weis could do well was recruit) or 2011 or 2014 or 2016.

Kelly had his hand forced by our old AD to stop hiring crony coordinators and he pulled in, consecutively, Mike Elko, Clark Lea (LB coach under Elko), and Marcus Freeman to stem the bleeding after ‘16 (otherwise his arse was gone). Not sure that’s the sign of a quality coach to have that forced on you, but take that as it is.

There’s also the intangible element that’s hard to fully articulate, but Kelly’s teams, even his best ND teams, never played with the edge and physicality that Freeman’s teams play with. That clown show LSU had today at the goal line gave me goddamn PTSD.

I don’t feel like going back through all of your posts. But you clearly said the only level that matters is winning a national championship. Therefore, by your logic, Hallman and Kelly are equal coaches. Ludicrous.

As for this gem, Freeman certainly has taken Notre Dame to a new level. Until last year, Notre Dame had not won a major bowl game since 1992 against Florida in the Sugar Bowl. Freeman won 2 major bowl games just last year - Sugar Bowl and Orange Bowl. So yeah, I would say that’s a new level. Kelly couldn’t sniff a win in a major bowl, and without looking it up, I don’t think he was within 3 TDs of winning any of his major bowl games.

The perception of BK was aided because the following were ND’s coaches from 1997-2009:

Bob Davie
Ty Willingham
Charlie Weis

The narrative was no one could win at ND anymore. In reality, the three coaches before BK were absolutely terrible coaches, so it made an average college football coach like Brian Kelly look like a miracle worker.

Scott Woodward’s an idiot and bought it. How sad for LSU.
