re: Manning not really breaking Drew's record should be a hot point of discussion

The passing yards record is almost a bad mark on the team because it indicates a one-dimensional offense constantly playing in close games or coming from behind.
or it means you have a very accurate QB and good WRs

Only Denver wasn't one dimensional, not playing from behind in many games

True, but no QB has ever led the league in passing yards and won the super bowl in the same year.

Oh, so he would have had to play the 2nd half to break it if they ruled it a lateral.

Before 2009, no team thay had lost its last three regular season games had won a Super Bowl.
Correlation <> causation.

This is more important than the Eagles game.

Well that's pretty meaningless. The year the Colts won the SB, Manning was like 20 yards away from leading the league in passing yards.

The fact that NFL.com and ESPN.com have pulled the Manning record headline out of the top stories make me think there is no chance this gets brought up on a national level.
Manning not looking god like is something the ESPN will not tolerate.

Only to idiots.

The Saints fans are very defensive about the significance of passing for a lot of yards. I cannot blame them given that is what their QB is known for. I would rather have the touchdowns.
Brees led the league in passing in 2008 and nearly broke the yards record. What was the Saints record that season? 8-8, I believe. He was not even among the top 2 in passing in 2009 and they won the super bowl.
Passing yards are simply not that highly correlated to success in the NFL.

2nd in yards per game.
6th in total pass yards. He sat out the last game of the season, while everyone ranked ahead of him started all 16 games.

Wanna guess who led the league in TD passes that year?

I think the NFL took away Gronk's record setting touchdown because the pass was thrown backwards. I wouldn't be stunned if they took it back. But then again, it is Peyton Manning.

Signed, butt hurt Saints fan. Who cares! It is not a home run record, it will be broke sooner than later.
Posted on 12/30/13 at 10:37 am to Napoleon
No, not really. Peyton Manning could have shattered that record, but decided to sit the second half because it's not a record he's that worried about getting. He acknowledged that passing yards isn't an important stat, passing touchdowns is.

Hell, even the "home run record" is not the home run record.

That is skewed by the year of the QB in 2011 when 3 different players threw for over 5,000 yards and over 40 touchdowns while another 1 or 2 threw for 4,900 yards and 39 touchdowns. I think the strike-shortened off-season probably had something to do with that. That was the year Peyton missed due to his injury. I have wondered what gaudy stats he would have had that year, which seemed like a huge anomaly. I mean Matt Stafford had 5,000+ yards and 41 touchdowns, an MVP season any other year. Even Drew's 46 touchdowns that year were not enough for MVP since Rodgers threw 45 in 1 less game and with fewer interceptions and a record-breaking passer rating.

Even Eli was 67 yards short of 5,000 that year.
